What happened to the 7k100 Hitachi Drives for ATA

#1 Post by billp117 » Tue Jan 22, 2008 2:27 am

I have been following NewEgg.com to find a 7200 RPM drive for my T43. I see they are no longer listed and have apparently been replaced by the "E" series...which I understand is for desktops or servers. Do you folks have a recommedation for a reliable 7200 rpm drive for the T4X series of Thinkpads at a reasonable price?

Thanks...Bill

I will recommend Seagate Momentus 7200.1 models. They will come with valuable 5 years warranty.

Thanks for your reply...the link is for the E7k100, which appears to be the only PATA drive from Newegg.com. I was looking for the 7K100 and I think I may have one lined up from the forum.

Thanks...Bill

Is that what you're looking for?
That's the one the the "E". Don't use that one.

You should just go ahead get the Seagate Momentus 7200.1.

Will the Seagate give me the bios error in a T43?

Some people using this drive have this error but others don't. I don't know what to make of it. Even if you do get this error, it is displayed for only several seconds (no more than 5 sec if I remember correctly) and you can turn off the beep. So, it's really not that bad.

You can get the 7K100 drive from ZipZoomFly.com. I bought both my 7K60 3 years ago, and my 7K200 last year from there. It tends to be a bit cheaper than NewEgg for hard drives (but not anything else).

I have one in use in an A31. What are the drawbacks other than higher power? This Thinkpad is always on AC.

Brent explained it very well in this post.

Thanks for the link. This E7K100 is being used in a home computer as a desktop replacement. It gets put to sleep twice per day and majority of valuable files are on a NAS. So far it has worked well.

I have a few of these 7K60/7K100/E7K100s in use. Frankly I didn't notice any dramatic difference in speed as compared to Fujitsu 5400 drives. May be I just don't have a side by side comparison.

OK...I picked up a 160GB Seagate Momentus and also have the Lenovo Hitachi 7k100 coming. Will try them both and let you know how they work in the T43.

Bill, I am looking forward to your review. I am especially curious to see they interact with Thinkpad software such as power management, active protection, etc. as well as HD temperature esepcially on a T43. Notebook Hardware Control would be great to monitor that.

Bill where did you get the Hitachi? I thought they stopped making them. I presume that they don't give the BIOS error.

Will do...it is easy to say it worked or crashed. I just installed the Seagate 160 and it crashed. I could not great past the error message. I am cloning it with a newer Version of Seagate Diskwizard right now.

I bought the 7k100 from a fellow forum member and will install it when it arrives.

I am probably going to pass on buying a used drive.

So what's deal? We have to buy 7200RPM hard drives from Lenovo or encounter errors?

Installing the 160GB Seagate into the T43 was a total failure. It will end up in another computer. It would not even get past the error when hitting the "esc" key. And there are no firmware updates for that drive.

Now to see if the Lenovo/Hitachi 7k100 will work.

OK...the 160GB Seagate is now in my X30 and running perfect.

I removed the Hitachi 40GB drive from the T43 and replaced it with a fru-p/n39t2585...aka Hitachi HTS721010GAT00. It must have been defective as I could never get it to work. I formatted it a couple times, removed the partitions and put them back in. And finally cloned it with Acronis (Seagate version)...again a total waste of time. Finally it failed totally with an error code 0200 failure fixed disk along with two fast beeks from the T43. The Lenovo site lists this as the largets approved model number on the T43 site: Hard drive 100GB, 9.5 mm, 7,200 rpm 2668-P2x, P5x, P6x, P7x, P8x, Q2x, Q4x, Q5x, Q8x HGST 39T2585 1

I put the 40GB drive back in and it worked perfect. BTW...I got a warning on the T43 that the USB slots were overheating. I put the drive in a USB/ATA 2.5 drive case and that almost fried my USB ports.

The upgrading the T43 has been a total pain in the $#@$#@. But, I like a project. I had hopes that the Genuine Lenovo/IBM/Hitachi drive would have worked fine in the T43...no such luck.

It is now a phone call and return of the drive for warranty replacement. Since it is new, I hope they will send a new drive. My guess is it will be a rebuilt. :(

I also tried installing Vista again and the T43 does not like it...the T43 gets very hot. It runs fine with XP.

Later...Bill
