Hardware Malfunction Memory Parity Error!!, HELP :-( :-(

#1 Post by djThinkbad » Thu Jan 24, 2008 2:30 pm

Asking this question for a friend. He has a T43p and recently has the message below pop up on a blue screen when he leaves his laptop alone for a while (2-3hours or more).
During this time usually (Bitcomet is running/dowloading stuff)

*** Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted ***

I have done some trouble shooting of my own before, so I used pc doctor on his machine to see if any errors come up. I did the whole 100% pc doctor diagnostics but no errors.

Anyone else ever have this error message or a similar problem before?
What could be a possible reason? :?

Hopefully, it's a bad memory chip.

I would do a memory test with memtest86 which can be found here.

I would also make sure all the drivers are up to date with a focus on graphics drivers.

Thanks Guys for replying but I reformatted the hardrive/ updated the drivers and swaped the memory chips with my friend's T43 (to test)...

I still get the Hardware Malfunction memory parity error :-(.
I researched online and found many results for this type of error and I now think that this memory error is talking about some other type of memory, not the 1gb memory sticks! Something like maybe a motherboard or video memory??

Any Software/Laptop Guru that can help me?
This is what happens if computer is left on for a while (3 or more hours)

Try installing PC Doctor and run Video memory test... That'll give you the idea what's wrong.

I started having that message randomly with my t43p and my system started to run slowly and strangely. I eventually took it in to a shop and they said there was a problem on the motherboard which they fixed for a couple of hundred bucks. They said it probably happened because of a power surge and that it's probably affected the hard drive too. So far I haven't had the error again but my hard drive has been sounding funny so I will probably have to replace it too eventually...

OK, let me update, turns out the NMI parity error has NOT gone away and the system started to slow down again so I took it back into the shop. They told me there wasn't anything they could do for me anymore, that they checked the memory, the cooling system etc etc. So now I've got this mysterious problem and a laptop that I love but can't use because the errors happen mysteriously and completely without warning.

Is there anyone out there who might have an idea of what it could be? it's incredibly frustrating and makes my machine basically useless...

Look in the event log. See if there is anything else.

@ austerlitz:

It is unclear to me what tests you have run yourself - so if you are able to (as I understand you are?) boot from a CD-ROM, I would strongly suggest you try all the following:

1) Download and burn a bootable CD-ROM with PC Doctor for DOS bootable CD - ThinkPad - and run it numerous times.

2) Download, burn a bootable CD-ROM with memtest86+ - and run it numerous times.

3) Consider enabling "Extended Memory Test" in the BIOS; see where in the BIOS simulator - ThinkPad T42/p with fingerprint reader (--> Config --> Memory) - I guess the same would apply to T43p's.

Did you check if your T43p is still under warranty? (check this at Warranty Lookup). If so, and if everything fails for yourself, consider... you-know-what.

Best wishes with your error-hunt!

Kind regards,

Johan

Got the mobo- replaced for $250, but guess what... the Error still occurs

Out of money / out of luck / out of hopeee...

I'm gonna lay my T43p to rest now, it did me good for a while.

QUESTION:
Whats a good price for a t60p or t60? I'm lookin on ebay and dont wanna get ripped off. :x
I got me a T43P, a T42 and a T41

The T41 never had any problems except a keyboard replacement

The T42 never gave me a problem

BUT THE T43P IS A DIFFERENT HOT & NOISY BEAST >95*C (on fire all the time/everytime)

This is surely BAD news... :-(

However, please inform if you DID run the tests on your RAM module(s), as suggested above (in my post of Sat Feb 23, 2008 11:51 pm)? If it is the RAM that is failing... then the failure will follow the RAM, and not the mainboard!

Please keep us posted - this is not the way any o want to see "this" end. All my best wishes for you to have this (blasted!) problem fixed.

A high-end UXGA/FlexView T60p was announced for sale the other day in the Marketplace: FS: T60p 15" UXGA Flxvw 2.16CD 2GB 100GB OnSt W - you won't find it cheaper at eBay, I would say.

Kind regards,

Johan

I had a series of NMI Parity Errors on my T43 that ended on their own.

Now, I get hourly PFN_LIST_CORRUPT errors. I've already had the system board replaced twice, in addition to the fan, keyboard, and optical drives. It looks like I'm either going to have the memory or the control board replaced this time.

Did I get a lemon or something?

The error seems to only occur when I am using Bit-comet
I got me a T43P, a T42 and a T41

The T41 never had any problems except a keyboard replacement

The T42 never gave me a problem
