A larger picture of the rounded rectangular area is shown here:

Yes, I wonder what it is? What usually is there in that location on earlier models?

Back in the good old days of the 701 and 755s, you could send in to get a sticker printed with your initials to personalize your Thinkpad.

Perhaps IBM is revisiting those times?

Could be a new asset tag, but it definitely is not a standard asset tag. I had IBM asset tag my laptop and it's a big silver (2"x1") printed label that's positioned in the lower left-hand corner of the closed screen case.

It'd be cool if they gave you a plate to engrave...

The current bluetooth antenna is located on the side of the LCD, mid-way down. Is this changed for the Flexview screens?

Any idea why they changed the location? Is there any functional advantage/disadvantges with this change?

I looked up the R50p flexview location of the BT antenna and type and it is the place as on the T42p 15". It uses a Meander type antenna instead of a directional antenna like the 14". My guess is that they needed all the side space possible to fit the screen for the 15". Since BT is supposed to be for personal devices, I can't see how it'd hurt the use of BT products with the T42 15". I remember someone commenting from the old forums that the T4x 14" had better reception for their BT mouse on one side vs the other.. I guess this will help that (but that shouldn't have been an issue in the first place IMO)

First off, the new antenna has higher peak gain (2.84dBi vs. 1.20dBi). The 14.1" models have the lowest reception to the direct right of the ThinkPad, if I had to guess, I'd say the LCD could be interfering with the signal. The new location places the antenna in the lower part of the LCD bezel, which could give it better reception along the plane parallel to the keyboard (i.e. on the desk, where most BT devices will be). Note that I can't check if this is the case, because the FCC documentation doesn't have a radiation pattern for the 15" model's BT antenna. Also the new antenna is smaller so it may be cheaper.
