I have the same noise. I don't think it's the speakers, but rather some electronic component. My old PC used also make a high pitched sound when max/min windows.

I have the same noise - wondering if it is the inverter....

I think this is pretty common on many notebooks. I don't seem to have it on mine, if it is coming out of the speakers. I stuck my head next to them and maximized and minimized everything I could.

I have heard this mentioned as a somewhat common occurance.

It's not coming from the speakers. Someone told me once that this is the processor (You can actually hear it at times, but I am not sure that it really is that sound). Anyways, I hear it coming out of the fan region somewhere. After all, it's the door to the inner regions...

Is it a really high pitched sound, almost like a beep?? I had this sound on a Dell Inspiron 8600. It happened when I minimized or maximized windows. I think the sound was coming from the GPU but I never figured out for sure. It was so annoying I returned the computer and decided to go with a Thinkpad now.

I think I heard it today. It was very faint. I really had to strain to hear it, and stick my head next to the computer.

So, I guess mine does it too, but it sure isn't going to bother me, as I can barely here it when I'm trying to.

I also have this strange noise. It startet after using my TP for about 1 year and is getting louder with time. A few days ago my graphic card broke (just coloured lines and squares on the screen) and I thought this was related to this noise. But after IBM changed the system board I got my T40p back with exact the same noise. Still thinking if I should send them my Thinkpad again. Does anyone know if this noise is reparable? Is it just replacing the inverter or so?

I don't think it's the inverter because the inverter (which powers the LCD backlight) is independent of the display controller/GPU; in other words, it's either on or off and doesn't matter what's being displayed on the screen. The noise is normal.
