moving hard drive from t40 to t43

#1 Post by henni » Sat Jan 26, 2008 9:17 am

have a couple spare systems and would like to experiment with moving the HD from a t40 to a t43

in the past, I've had no problems with going from one machine to another, provided they are same model or fairly similar (ie. t40 --> t40 or t41)

all system hd images are corporate/volume license editions of either xp pro sp2 or 2k3 enterprise which do not require activation and do not complain that the hardware has changed

small adjustments I've had to learn was to first uninstall the ati video drivers, before proceeding to swap out hd from one laptop to next.

any other suggestions or tips to consider before I attempt t40 to t43?

One person got it to work, another didn't. They are different chipsets (T40/1/2 vs T43), which causes problems.

Give it a try, what do you have to lose? I was successful in moving my HD from a T41 to a T43 without having to reinstall Windows.

The only issue I had was with the TPM driver, however I believe that may be resolvable with a repair install of Windows. Unfortunately, I couldn't try it because my entire drive is encrypted with proprietary corporate software (which prevents any software, including the Windows install boot CD, from seeing contents on the hard drive from outside the installed Windows XP). Anyway, as noted in my post, my machine seems to be running fine with the TPM module disabled. YMMV.

Here are some more links on the Windows repair installation option:

If you do try it, please report back and let us know if you were successful.

Good luck!
