Yes. R series uses ultrabay enhanced (thicker) and T series uses ultrabay slim, but the slim will also work in the R series.

A dvd from a T4* can be used in an R5*. The enhanced drives are 12,5mm, slim 9mm. You just have a gap of 3,5mm.

what is the best 12.7mm drive with most features in the market now. ( HD, B-ray )

Unfortunately you'll find the 9.5mm internal drive for the T4x series is quite expensive. I have both an internal drive (Matshita UJ842 - FRU 40Y8622), and a USB external 16x NEC DVD-RW drive.

I use the external burner 85% of the time, as it's faster plus reduces wear on my internal drive. The internal drive is mainly for travelling, as I need for my work.

If you do minimum DVD burning while travelling with your notebook, I recommend the external burner as is less expensive and is faster for burning.

Did the 40Y8622 come with your T42 from the beginning or you bought it from IBM later? It's the only curved faceplate drive that is double layer dvd capable right? Is it quiet? I've never seen this drive sold on eBay but on IBM's site it costs about €130EUR

I bought the curved bezel 40Y8622 from IBM later.

It is very quiet, and burns DL at 2.4x, and also DVD-R/+R at 8x.

Thanks for the info!! I think it is the drive I'll be getting. I kinda hesitate because the faster UJ-852 costs €20 less, but it comes with flat faceplate only, and I don't know how to change the faceplate

I think what you are looking for is this This. As far as I can tell, this is the fastest IBM drive available. Here are the technical numbers.

Yes, as PatrickE has mentioned, this is the fastest IBM internal drive (model 40Y8622 for T42, with curved faceplate to match casing). Notebook internal drives are generally limited to 8X speed due to notebook power restrictions.

For additional speed and for burning many DVD's from a desk environment, a USB external drive is very handy.

What is your intended use for the drive?

for the backup on dvd-ram every two weeks
but in Italy it is truly difficult to find discs dvd-ram

fromt IBM's site
The Notebook Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive is compatible with:
Microsoft Windows 2000
Windows XP

Why? Silm Drive is only hardware and the cd/dvd driver is compatible with all Windows.

These drive are not fastest. There are various models faster than this.
The fastest is:
cd-rom 24x
cd-r 24x
cd-rw 24x
dvd-rom 8x
dvd-r 8x
dvd-rw 6x
dvd+R 8x
dvd+rw 8x
dvd-r DL 4x
dvd+R DL 4x
dvd-ram 5x

cd-rom 120 ms
dvd-rom 150 ms

I have seen this product in passed but I not acquired it why I was not still sure to buy a T42.

DVD-RAM discs have excellent error-correction, and also can operate like a hard drive. However, they are relatively expensive, are limited to ~4GB for data backup, and cannot be read by many optical drives - a shortcoming for accessing data if your DVD-RAM drive fails.

A common backup strategy for the Thinkpad you might consider - is to use a second hard drive in the modular bay. Data can be backed up to this drive every day - and the drive can also contain your entire system, to immediately replace your main hard drive should it fail.

For increased data security, you could also make a backup set to DVD-ROM discs every 2 weeks, and also store off-site to protect from fire, etc. DVD-ROM discs can be read by practically all DVD drives, allowing instant access to your data should your computer fail.

The Panasonic UJ-852 writes DL DVDs at 4x. However all UJ-852s come with the flat faceplate, which is designed for the T6 series. It will fit in a T42 but may look quite odd.

Yes, writing to DVD-R or to DVD+R discs. Some of the most reliable disc brands are Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden.

Again, you can then read these discs with essentially any DVD-ROM drive, so your data is always accessible.

There are many products with the characteristics that over I have written but they are all 12mm.

The posterior connector of drive IBM is standard?

Which are the speeds of model 41N5643?

comparison between different optical drives

ATTENTION
The connector of Ultrabay Slim is similar to the connectors standard, but in the middle it has a line of contacts

Do you mainly use your notebook in a desktop situation?

I think you'll find an external DVD writer will meet your needs better than an internal drive. The specifications of an external drive are more powerful, and it can be used with your present notebook and any replacement notebook - without spending money again on a compatible internal drive.

Please consider an external DVD drive, and please include any questions you may have.

I bought a UJ-852 as an upgrade to a UJ-842 specifically to get 4x DVD DL capability. But I cannot find any good quality media that it is willing to burn at 4x! I have tried Verbatim, TDK, Memorex and Fuji, all of which would only burn 2.4x. The only one I tried that would burn at 4x was cheapo "GQ - Great Quality" media (Frys house brand), which has a fake MID and looks like there was some errors in the scan I did after the burn.

I agree with Bill - it doesn't look "quite odd" on a T4x. I have the UJ-852 (and 842 before it) installed in a T43, and while it doesn't look "perfect" it is far from "quite odd". I don't even notice it.

I don't know where you find this brand in the US, but Intact media works well for me....

I have never seen that brand here.

Actually I found places in AU that sell original Ricoh-branded DVD+R DL - which is supposed to be one of the better DL medias (Ricoh was the first in the world to make a 16x +R DL media for example), but I would like to avoid ordering from across the world since among other things, the shipping cost ends up being a significant portion of the cost of the media, especially if I ever have to return something.

Do you know who makes that media, or at least the MID code?
