Primary v. Secondary display

#1 Post by katman » Fri Nov 26, 2004 4:04 am

Is anyone familiar with the settings tab in "Display Properties"?

On systems that can handle 2 video outputs, there is usually a "primary (1)" and a "secondary (2)" montior, which the user can swtich back and forth or turn off.

On my T42 I only see one. Presentation manager doesn't allow the same ease of transition, and seems to only extend the desktop, as opposed to create a separate desktop.

Any help? Thanks. Could this be an issue with the IBM drivers, or should I try the omega, or regular catalyst?

Primary and Secondary display settings have to do with displaying moving video. Your ThinkPad can't simultaneously display moving video on both the LCD and an external monitor, so it displays the moving video on the Primary display and blanks the Secondary.

It's weird you don't see the second display in the settings. Maybe try a driver update, especially Hydravision, and maybe the ATI control panel, but chances are it doesn't help...

There's another thing to primary and secondary display, when you extend the desktop: The taskbar is only on the primary.
And how come it can only show moving video on one display? I don't like this restriction. It bugged me a few times already...
