PLEASE HELP - Copying HDD with Ghost 12!

#1 Post by maharajaverma » Fri Feb 01, 2008 11:27 pm

I need some serious help- I have been trying upgrade my hard drive from the 40 GB that came with my T41. I have been on the forums a lot and got the Samsung 160 GB HM160HC single platter. I followed all the ghost instructions on this forum and others but when I take out the old HDD and boot with the new drive nothing shows up just a blinking cursor. Please help anybody!

Ghost 12 Commands followed:
Start Ghost 12.
Click Tools tab on the left.
Click Copy My Hard Drive.
The wizard starts » Next
Select the Source Drive (usually your C: drive) » Next
Select the Destination. This MUST be unallocated space on the second HD » Next
Tick Check source for file system errors.
Tick Check destination for file system errors.
Tick Resize drive to fill unallocated space if that's what you desire. (It's your choice.)
Tick Set drive active for booting.
Don't tick Disable SmartSector copying.
Don't tick ignore bad sectors during copy.
Tick Copy MBR.
Destination partition type: Primary partition.
Drive letter: None » Next
Finish.

Did you format the new disk? Is it bootable? Those two things need to be done before any duplicating can be successful.
I found Norton Ghost to be heavy handed so I use Casper XP which does it's work through Windows flawlessly.

Yes, after formatting the disk and making it bootable, you may want to consider an alternative to Ghost.

I also upgraded to the Samsung HM160HC hard drive, and used Acronis True Image for transferring from my existing Hitachi 80GB.

A lot of users on the forum have had success with Acronis True Image. After using Ghost for many years, I now find Acronis has more options for ensuring successful hard drive cloning, including manual resizing the partitions before doing the transfer. This can be very attractive if you want to transfer the Hidden Service Partition, and also if you want to set various partition types (eg FAT32 and also NTFS).

I tried using the Acronis program but it won't let me clone the drive at the boot from a CD with the trial copy, and I really didn't want to buy it since I have ghost already. I think my problem is with the Predesktop area (HPA). Ghost doesn't seem to recognize that its there. I have since disabled the HPA from the bios menu and preforming a ghost from the CD at boot with the -ib function enabled. I hope this works...

Again, I find the Hidden Partition is also handled well by Acronis.

Alternatively, if you've burned a set of Product Recovery Disks, you may want to delete the HPA and gain extra Hdd space and then clone using Ghost.

I don't believe Ghost is able to copy the HPA. Give this link a try, it explains what I did to upgrade my drive on my T41.

Really good to hear! Ghost is also a great utility for imaging my C-drive, to reinstall quickly in the event of viruses or file corruption.

For a quiet fan, try the model FRU 13R2657. Have fitted these to both T42's in my signature below, and both run extremely quiet.

I got me a T43P, a T42 and a T41

The T41 never had any problems except a keyboard replacement

The T42 never gave me a problem
