On Screen Controls for LCD Brightness/Volume level/F7 missin

#1 Post by coreman » Sat Feb 02, 2008 8:13 am

I've searched for answers but must not be asking the right search terms as I haven't found any answers...

Simply put, I've lost my on-screen controls for LCD Brightness, Volume level, and the on screen control panel for switching video outputs (Fn F7). I use a two monitor setup at work but turned the second monitor off in using "Display Properties" as I am on holiday now and just using laptop. I just tried to call up Thinkpad Configuration from "Control Panel" but it doesn't show up either...

Computer is T41 with Win XP SP2.

I hope this is simply a software switch that got accidentally thrown somewhere...

Thanks in advance...

Try the following: Right Click on your desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > On Screen Display - Make sure there is a Check / Tick in the On-Screen Display box
T60F: (Integrated Intel GPU) - [Another T60 FrankenPad!...Different approach]
R60F: (Integrated Intel GPU) - [ThinkPad R60 15.0" FrankenPad]

Thanks for the effort but I don't have such a box to tick...I went completely through the "Advanced" settings and there is nothing labeled "On Screen Display".

Any other suggestions?? I use the FN-F7 key a lot...and I really hate not being able to see what I am doing...

Try installing the Hotkey Driver, I believe it's on your TP under IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\HOTKEY. If not you can download at: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-38953

Thanks...the Hotkey Driver fixed the problem...any idea why the Hotkey Driver would suddenly quit working? The only unusual activity I did before the problem was a complete backup with Acronis 8.0 (not incremental).

Found my own answer as to why the Hotkey disappeared because it happened again today...I used CCleaner and cleaned my registry out.

Apparently CCleaner thinks these hotkeys are "unused file extensions". CCleaner found a lot of garbage as I've recently done a fair amount of uninstalling leaving behind lots of orphan dlls and other crud.

So I didn't pay good attention to what I was deleting and I deleted them without knowing what they were (can't tell from their location or filename).

Just in case someone comes looking for an answer...
