T42P blue screening
T42P blue screening
Okay ever since yesterday, turned on the laptop from hibernate (as usual), booted into XP Pro, seemed a little laggy than normal.
Eventually could not use the system as it was extremely slow and grinding to a halt, peformed a reset via power button. Booted backup again got to the Win XP splash screen where i was presented with a blue screen:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
"If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, then restart your computer.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x00000024, (0x00190203, ...
Okay so I thought I need to so a CHKDSK /F, luckyly I had another HDD with Vista in the HDD Adapter Caddy, booted into that seemed extremely laggy too, restarted Vista, then presented with a bluescreen too, very odd considering its a different physical drive.
The bluescreen is the same as the XP one above, except for the stop message:
*** STOP: 0x00000024, (0x00190445, ...
Both messages dont last long and the system reboots soon after, so I dont have a chance to write the whole string down.
From the error message, I have not installed any new software or hardware, I use AVG Free, Zone Alarm Free, trouble is I cannot boot the drive to remove the software.
Took both HDD out the system, used a USB to HDD connector to access the drive via another PC, system detects a HDD (found new HDD balloon, etc) but fails to display it in MY COMP and in DISK MANAGEMENT. Very odd!!
So far, I thought it might have been the laptop, so I managed to find a old laptop HDD with an old working XP image, plugged it in the HDD Caddy Adaptor, booted up successfully.
My take on this is both disks (XP and Vista) have become screwed, the system has not been dropped or mishandled - its a T42P, so not an option, any clues??
I have tried the following link [http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm] which indicates NTFS, I am yet to try the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test as soon as I can find a floppy.
Your comments, suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks

If you are able to (as I understand you are?) boot from a CD-ROM, I would strongly suggest you try all the following:
1) Download and burn a bootable CD-ROM with PC Doctor for DOS bootable CD - ThinkPad - and run it numerous times.
2) Download, burn and run (multiple runs!) a bootable CD-ROM with memtest86+.
3) Consider enabling "Extended Memory Test" in the BIOS; see where in the BIOS simulator - ThinkPad T42/p with fingerprint reader (--> Config --> Memory).
4) If you can, get the (free and highly recommended!) Sysinternals/Microsoft "Task Manager-like" utility: Process Explorer and investigate what process(es) take up your CPU-time. Play with disabling any automatically start-up programs using another free (and also highly recommended) Sysinternals/Microsoft utility: Autoruns for Windows.
Is your T42p still under warranty? (check this at Warranty Lookup). If so, and if everything fails for yourself, consider... you-know-what.
Best wishes with your error-hunt!
Kind regards,
Johan

Just performed a DFT via floppy, it did find "one of more corrupted sectors found" on the full test, allowed DFT to deleted and repair the sectors, which it did successfully "operation completed successfully, disposition code: 0x00". Rebooted system, still blue screening, tried again all modes of safe mode, etc, all of which fail.
Tried to restore from an IBM backup image, which it cannot see, so I've decided to do a restore from factory defaults and see what happens next.
All this work is for the XP PRO, I'm still a little baffled why the Vista disk is suffering from the same issue, which is on a seperate disk, which i rarely boot from.
Never the less, I'll see how this restore goes and keep you posted on developments.

I googled one of your error codes and found some info:
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/49986/
It seems the culprit is a software called Wipe Free Space. Does it sound familar to you?
Please let us know how's the recovery going.

Perfectdisk 8?
You didn't by any change install Perfectdisk 8 by Raxco and then use it to defrag your HD, did you?
I ended up installing and uninstalling that program three times over the course of a week or so because using it gave me that exact same problem each time I used it.
Of course, I have no idea whether it was conflicting with something else, but I do know taking it off solved the problem every time.

Okay, last night was reaching high impatient levels and ended up restoring XP to factory defaults then restoring an imaged snapshot via Acronis. Working beautifully.
Regarding the Vista drive, once XP was up and running I performed a CHKDSK /F which corrected the disk and was able to access it, still have to test whether I can boot into Vista.
Will be home in about 8 hrs so I'll post my findings on that.
Rather strange to find both phyiscal disks go hay wire!?

No worries, but other than the exact error codes (which I don't have or remember) that was the issue I was having.ThaDon wrote:Sorry rush242 no perfectdisk 8.

Never hurts to suggest a solution. 8^]

Were you also able to boot into Vista?

Managed to get Vista to boot, however I've noticed very oddly, that if I try to access files on the Vista drive, I can no probs. If I shutdown/hibernate XP then boot up into Vista, I may get an error asking me to repair the install of Vista.
The only way I can successfully get back into Vista is to reboot the machine and run CHKDSK /F on the Vista drive, takes a bit of a while, but were rolling again, very odd.
