T42 Vs T42 Vs R50

#1 Post by demisco » Sat Nov 27, 2004 12:50 pm

Hello people! This is my first time here! I plan to change my current laptop (HP Omnibook) and i aim to byu a T42 IBM model. I have in mind two models of T42 and one model R50
Please help me a bit with the decision. I have the following specifications:
T42(a) T42(b)
Processor Intel M 735 1.7 Intel M 735 1.7
Memory 512MB 1GB
Disk 40GB 40GB
Display 15" 1400x1050 14.1" 1024x768
Graphincs RADEON 9600 64MB RADEON 7500 32MB

The R50 is down on my list so I will not provide the specifications.
For above specifications I can get the same price but on the T42(b) i get an IBM carrying case also.
Sometimes I watch dvds on my laptop so my major concern here is the display. I would like know your comments/recommendations.

Thanks

For the same price I would definitely go with (a) because it has better screen (SXGA+ is beautiful), and the much much better graphic card on (a) (9600 is much much better than 7500). These things are what you cannot upgrade on a thinkpad.

The extra 512MB in (b) is something that can be upgraded and it is much cheaper to get extra RAM on your own. IBM charges arm and a leg for extra RAM. The carrying case you can buy and better and cheaper ones on your own. Plus the 512MB that already comes in (a) is plenty for most users.

Definitely go with (a)

Count me in for "A" as well...

100% agreed!

+ 1024*768 is the lowest resolution you should have today. A resolution of 1400*1050 is the better choice today.

Take "A" :) And if you like get 512MB later.

I have a 2378-FVU, and it sounds like "A" more or less. It's a great computer.

My vote also goes to A, along with the idea to drop the memory down as far as IBM will let you (256 probably), and picking up a 512 or 1 GB stick from Crucial.com.

The carrying case from IBM is probably overpriced (if you were to pay for it). Plinkerton and I have both had excellent experience with the Booqbag.com Powersleeve 14. Great!

Thank you very much for your replies. I have some more questions here :)
- Did you have any problems watching DVD on the T42 15" display?
- Any of you have tried to install Linux? I plan to install it. Did you have any problems?
