NON-CUSTOMER replaceable parts shipped ?? (under warranty)??

#1 Post by djThinkbad » Mon Feb 04, 2008 9:27 am

My LCD on my t43 went bad a week ago. Only the backlight comes on :-( no images. Anyway, I did a couple of tests like replaceing the cable/inverter-board/and then testing it with a friend's LCD which works fine on my laptop. SO 4 SURE ITS MY LCD PANEL AT FAULT

I remember once my friend was able to get IBM to ship out the motherboard to his house, for him to replace and send back the old.

I really wasn't happy with all the scratches they made last time I sent it in to get my motherboard replaced :-(

So Anyone have any suscess getting a non-customer replaceable part shipped to their house???

IBM just sent me a MiniPCI WiFi card for my T41p which is not normally consumer-replaceable, FWIW.

No success here. I tried to persuade them to send me a fan replacement, but they were repeating it's not a customer serviceable unit blah blah and I ended up ordering one from IBM.

I also had some bad experience with the repairing center so I wouldn't normally send them my machine unless I have too. They got my new ThinkPad scratched and replaced the wrong part. I had to send my machine in three times. Finally I talked to some sort of manager and he sent a technician to my house and I watched him changing the LCD cover.

Well if a fan is a non-customer replaceable unit, I have one on order with IBM. The H/w Manual gives directions for replacing any FRU. I suggest checking whether you can buy one from IBM.

(No use to you, of course, but I have the UK page bookmarked as I find it so incredibly difficult to find!)

 Nick you bought it... did not get it under warranty so it doesn't count
I got me a T43P, a T42 and a T41

The T41 never had any problems except a keyboard replacement

The T42 never gave me a problem

BUT THE T43P IS A DIFFERENT HOT & NOISY BEAST >95*C (on fire all the time/everytime)

I have found the representatives that you speak with vary widely in their helpfulness in this regard.

Some say no and you can't convince them otherwise. Some kind souls will be very sympathetic and comply with even what I consider outragous requests.

I second what Brad has said to the smallest detail. I've had LCDs delivered to my house...and a mobo on one occassion. That was several years ago.

Now that the condition of my eyes and hands prevent me from doing any serious work by myself, I just send it in, and have never had an issue-knock wood.

Thanks I have hope , :D

But how did you make them agree? Did you talk to a manager or take liability of your warranty?

I really had a bad experience with sending my laptop in and dont wanna make the same mistake again!

I second the opinion that the degree of flexibility depends on the representative.

I would also add that the type of warranty and how big your organization is (or just private use), has a large part to do with your usual options.

For example if you have a single-user depot warranty you will have a really hard time convincing a tech for a part shipment.

On the other hand if you have an on-site warranty (single-user) you usually have the option of a technician or a full liability part. That means the part you receive even if broken is your responsibility. If it doesn't work you have to ship the whole system to IBM for inspection.

Hope this helps.

Great!!! :) but I think it might be easier if you dont have on-site warranty. Cause if you do have on-site, they will just send a tech out and wont let you replace the part your self by shipping it to your house !

One time I had a dead fan. I was offered a replacement fan that I would install but was told if there were any further or related issues to the "FAN ERROR" that IBM would not cover the repair.

It seemed like an outrageous condition, so I sent in the T40. As it turned out, it was a not too common motherboard issue.

In general I've been happy with service over the years, although sometimes machines go back once or twice to make the repair perfect.

You were lucky! (Sometimes they even loose track of your machine)
& one gets it back after like a month :D
