HELP! Need to Recover from Dying T42!

#1 Post by acd » Mon Feb 04, 2008 11:36 am

IBM T42 / XP Professional

I can log-in to my T42's desktop. But, it takes ages to do so and when it finally lands up on the screen... i see NO icons or toolbar for another 20-30 minutes.... then I cannot get into any folder...

I guess my T42 will need a re-installation of windows... may I log -in in safe mode or BIOS and access "My Documents" - I need to recover them urgently...

PLEASE HELP!!!!

sounds like hardrive went bad, maybe take it to a local computer repair shop and they will copy any important data you might have

You may want to check out http://knoppix.com/ before paying someone to just copy some files. If you have another PC to burn it or can wait for the delivery, this stripped down version of Linux runs right off the CD so you can find and copy whatever files you need onto an external harddrive, USB key, or what have you. This has saved me a couple of times! good luck :)

It may be that you are experiencing a problem with tvtscheduler, it sounds very much like it as it hits mostly at the beginning of a month. This post has a fix.
Try booting into safe mode and changing the service TVTSCHEDULER from automatic start to manual, hopefully your TP will then boot normally.

Regardless of the problem cause, if you can't access your files, you need to have a backup of your files - or create one.

PC Inspector is a free utility that has very good success recovering inaccessible files. You can download it here:
