unstable wireless when not using netstumbler

#1 Post by skanky » Sun Nov 28, 2004 9:16 am

okay this is weird, i have a T40 which i upgraded with an a/b/g card.

using xp2 and latest drivers, access connections and the wireless zero config service enabled (it takes an age to boot up if its disabled).

now the weird thing is that my wireless connection is horribly unstable if netstumbler isnt running, access conn reports the speed fluctuating between 1mbps and 36mbps (weird as i have a 54mbps router) and opening websites sometimes stall.

now if i run netstumbler, it stays at 36mbps and websites dont have the same problems.

also if i plug in a netgear wg511 54mbps pcmcia card, access connections reports me connecting at 54mbps...

is my a/b/g card stuffed?

edit: the only thing i can think of is that netstumbler stops the windows wireless service when it starts up. but if i set it to manual/disabled, it takes windows a lifetime to open.

any command line option to disable a specified service?

There are different schemes in PowerManagement. You might try making a new one and turning off the TP service that interferes. Anyway, good luck.

How much was the card? I got a a/b card, and am trying to decide if it would be better to buy an a-access point or an abg card for my b/g access point...

Now if your problems don't go away, this decision might already have been made...

PS does anybody know facts about range (and wall penetration) differences between the a and b/g standard? One would think that a would penetrate walls worse because of the higher frequency?

well so far making a batch file run "net stop wzcsvc" after it has connected (using access conns) has made my wireless a bit more stable.

though i think windows and access connections is fighting over which one gets to assign an ip to the machine.

I don't see them fighting on my T41. Works fine. I know Wireless Zero is running as well. ... JDHurst

posted a fix (applicable for me, mileage may vary other) in the windows forum.

but i could never get an ip assigned if WZC was enabled and access connections was running. i always had to repair the connection to get an ip.

i dont know why that is but i have 2 profile in AC, one for the IBM card and another for my netgear PCMCIA card, both with autoswitching between wired/wireless.

maybe someone at IBM/MS dont like me :)

I have exactly the same probem (I think): After being connected to Ethernet at work, disconnecting the ethernet cable, and putting the computer to standby, I don't get an IP with wireless at home anymore without repairing the connection.
For several other reasons (including the startup delay at login), I am now doing a fresh install. Maybe this problem gets solved, too...
