Agere Systems AC'97 Modem

#1 Post by Kike G. » Sun Feb 10, 2008 11:39 pm

Hi, everybody,

T40 ThinkPads come with this built-in modem. I've been using it for my dial-up Internet connection and performed very well. However, now I'm trying to use it to make regular phone calls but it doesn't work (not internet phone calls, nor VoIP calls... just regular phone calls using my computer as a phone by plugging in my regular telephone wire and using a software like Phone Dialer or similar).

First of all, I thought it was a problem of not having the right software. When trying to make a phone call with Phone Dialer 1.50 (developed for Microsoft by Active Voice and included in the Windows XP Professional package that came with my ThinkPad T40), there was no success: the computer was able to dial a regular local phone number; I heard the rings; I heard the other person picking up the phone in the destination number; I even could hear his/her voice... but when I spoke it was impossible for the other person to hear me.

Then I tried installing Modem Spy. However, when installing, the program showed a weird message, something like: "No voice modem was detected", although it showed that Agere Systems AC'97 modem was selected as the default modem for phone calls.

So my question is: is it true that Agere Systems AC'97 modem doesn't allow voice calls? Does it only work for dial-up internet connections?

Thanks for any your answers might be.

Regards,
Enrique
