T42p overheating

#1 Post by Madox » Wed Feb 13, 2008 1:25 am

Dear forum members,
I need your help to identify fault in my t42p. I bought it a week ago on
ebay. For some time it work flawlessly. First signs of troubles discovered
when I decided to install Gentoo Linux on it. At night I run compilation process
of system (which takes a very long time). At the morning a found that notebook
is turned off. Some time later I was experienced sudden shutdowns then I play
Quake III. I think these shutdowns occured due the overheating. I install
mobilemeter and run Quake III in windowed mode. While notebook was idle
temperature was approximately 47-50C and frequency 2100MHz. When I begin playing
temperature immediately begin to grow. After 5 min of gaming temperature already
was 87C. To avoid overheating frequency of CPU automaticaly fall to 1600MHz.
After that temperature slightly decreased to 70C, and frequency again become
2100MHz. In the end after ~40 min of playing I see that temperature was ranged
between 70-87C and CPU frequency was ranged between 600-2100MHz. This time
computer not shut down. But at the night of same day I run cpu burning test.
At the morning computer again was switched off.

So my questions is:
1. What temperature are normal for T42p under the load?
2. And what diagnostic tools you would recommend to use in my case?

One month of IWS warranty still remain on my notebook. But I fear that service
in our province wouldn't be nice, so I need to go there well prepared :-)

P.S. Sorry for my English...

Temperatures that high are not normal. I think the problem is going to involve the fan in the T42p. Either the fan itself is dying and just not performing well or the thermal paste between the heatsink/fan and the CPU needs to be replaced.

I would try to go back to a windows factory install to make sure the problem isn't the power management/fan control software.

There is two facts against this version:
- windows installed from recovery discs and contain no additional software or drivers
- problem existed also in linux

I would check the fan, and the cooling paste.

As uncomfortable as you may feel about sending it in for repair under IWS, you should do so right now, before more damage is done to the machine, and you end up spending a significant amount of time without it, while it's in your local depot. I'm also fairly certain that parts availability won't be as good as if you were in the States, so everything may take a while longer to begin with.

Shutoffs due to overheating are not something I'd play with.

Just my $0.02...

Good luck and keep us informed.

Ok, you convienced me. Today I take my notebook to local service. Though now I think the problem is in bad thermal paste I do not want to replace it by myself and void warranty.
