Executive diskeeper 9...

#1 Post by SimonCC » Mon Nov 29, 2004 11:08 am

I recently installed it and am happy and everything but i have noticed that the drive seems to be active a lot more (as the light indicates next to the caps lock light) - even when i switch smart schedule off?? Any thoughts on this as im worried that background intereferance despite the I/O sensor may actually slow access to my hd down.

I use it as well on all my machines and I haven't noticed any more HDD activity. I also do not use SmartScheduling, I do manual defrags since my laptop isn't on 24/7. I would try turning off all scheduling, check the Windows Task Scheduler as well. But I think the culprit probably lies in another app. Best suggestion is to disable startup apps one by one until you locate the source of the problem. Also consider turning off unnecessary services. Google Viper's Windows XP Services Guide and follow his instructions, he has some great services configurations for those who want to save RAM & startup time. GL

This touches on something I've wondered about for a while.

I have DK on a couple machines - a Netvista and my T20.

On the Netvista DK smart schedule and is perfectly behaved - comes on once in a while (usually at startup), does it's thing, goes away.

On the T20 I used to have an IBM 48GB drive (less then 50% full), and DK was horrible in Smart Scheduled mode. It would come on for 20 minutes every half hour or so - the HDD was always thrashing. I ran multiple manual defrags, boot time defrags, etc. but Smart Scheduling never worked right. Finally gave up and just did manual defrags.

Until I upgraded the HDD to an 80 GB IBM drive. Now Smart Scheduling works perfectly,

I susoect there is something about certain drive geometries or controllers that drives DK crazy - but I've never been able to in it down. Anyone have any insight or similar experiences?

smart schedule works great (when my computers on, so it can actually do its thing), what i want to know is whether DK contsantly operates in the background despite the schedule, for instance, is it monitoring files etc like an AV?? I ask this because i notice that since installation, the hd is always in slight operation (indicated by the 'flash a second' on the hd light). I looked on executives website and they do not mention if it rns in the background aside from when a schedule de-frag commences. any thoughts would be appreciated...

FYI, Windows XP optimizes the hard drive (not a degfrag just optimize). If you let the machine sit idle for a few minutes Windows will start moving files around. This may be what you see. If you have the disk indexing service enabled this will also contribute to hard drive activity.

Good call on that, I'm pretty sure I have both of those services disabled so that very well may be what SimonCC was seeing.

duffy, FYI i am aware that xp optimizes the hd, this is not the issue and i do not have indexing turned on. Before i installed DK this (constant hd activity) was not happening, so again i ask - all windows issues aside! - if anyone uses DK and has a simmilar experiance or knows how executive DK could be the culprit, your views would be appreciated... :)

I use DK9 and I don't have the issue.
