Can't play DVDs

#1 Post by daneguy » Fri Feb 15, 2008 5:29 pm

I have a T43 and I'm having real difficulty reading a lot of DVDs. After some chewing on the disc the drive will show the contents but if I try to copy it doesn't go anywhere. Some DVDs it won't even see. The DVDs play in other players.

Any thoughts?

Drive is getting old or there's something gumming up the laser lens/carriage assembly. You could try gently cleaning the lens with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. You could also try running PC Doctor for DOS (Diagnostics heading) CDROM/DVD test or downloading DVDInfoPro and running the CRC test.

You seem to be getting symptoms of optical disk failure, I’m sorry to say.

Ray’s advice is sound, you could try lubricating the head guide rails will the smallest amount of silicon grease too, that may help.

If not I would seek out a replacement drive in the sales forum or on that “other” place, if you don’t get an improvement from the work arounds offered.

One other possibility concerns the content of the DVDs. If they are data DVDs, then I had a lot of trouble with Sonic on my T43. I changed to using Nero and writing DVDs (to an external writer) in UDF, rather than ISO, format and all was cured. The problem concerned file names.

Certainly if the OP is talking about DVD-R or DVD+R disks then it can depend upon the quality of the disks and the writer that was used to burn them. However from the description that the disks in question "play" in other drives, I'd lean more toward a problem with the T43's drive being at fault.

If warranty is still available you could have a replacement in a few days to eliminate the possibility of a hardware problem.
