T42 1.8 SXGA+ 1400 x 1050
T42 1.8 SXGA+ 1400 x 1050
I have been doing a lot of reading on the T42 on this forum, and have found a lot of people who have gone for the T42 in SXGA+ after concerns that the screen would be too small for them. This is the position that I am in, and it seems 100% of people recomend taking the SXGA+ over the cheaper XGA 1024 x 768 model.
I will be using this notebook for around 10 hrs per day, and don't want to go blind with eye strain.....so does any one have any good things to say about the XGA - or is the SXGA+ the only way to go (bearing in mind that here in UK the model is around the $3500 - and that's not incl VAT!)??
Maybe someone can recomend cheaper retailers in the UK other than Insight.com etc?
Thanks

how are your eyes..?
what is your primary use..?
the XGA is a good model but most opt for the SXGA+..
i can only suggest that you find someone with each display and take a look, then make your decision..
and, yes, i ship internationally..

People often complain about SXGA+ on other notebooks or CRTs saying they can't read such a high resolution because everything is so small. If I run my CRT monitor at that resolution I will have a headache after about 5 minutes, however my thinkpad sxga+ on the 14" screen is incredibly crisp and clean. I love it and I use it all day with no eye strain.

I am using T42 SXGA+ on 15". I love it. I used to have 15" with UXGA. The fonts are very small. Before i get my 15" SXGA+, i considered to get 14" SXGA+ because of the notebook size. Then i worried that the fonts will be too small like my 15" UXGA. I ended up ordering SXGA+ on 15". Everything works perfectly. The fonts are not too big or too small.
If you like the small fonts, go with 14" SXGA+ else 15" SXGA+ (Flexview Screen).

Yet another resolution conversation
I'll weigh in on this too. I had an SXGA+ on a 14" T42 for a couple weeks. Right out of the box I couldn't read a thing. I tweaked a bunch of things suggested here on the forum like DPI to 125, using "large fonts" where I could, changing IE settings and using Firefox. That helped each in their own way but caused other issues in the changes. I started to loose the clarity and formating of some stuff. I was always tweaking something each time I used different applications. In the end I got tired of fighting it and swapped for an XGA 14".
While the screen was super nice on the SXGA and brighter and clearer than the XGA, I've become used to the look and don't miss it. Most of all I stopped fighting and started using the T42 for what it was meant to do for me.
This XGA screen looks fine to me now. It seems much more true than my colleages with HP's and Gateways and Toshibas.
It did send me to the eye doctor again and I am now awaiting trifocal lenses as I have realized I've got much more trouble focusing than I had ever noticed.
So it goes.

Absolutely. Have been doing it now for the past few weeks. I easily work that much on it. It goes with me everywhere and I sit down and use it all the time.bpsss wrote:Can you comfortably work 10 hrs a day though on 14" SXGA"?
My mother has similiar issues to ones you worry about with my old notebook, 15" 1400x1050, that I gave her and I was not able to merely adjust the font sizes to make it acceptable. Largely because the main program she uses for practice management does not use the Windows specified fonts (Grrr...). Just thought I would mention this type of issue as it might be something easily overlooked. Its rare that software has this issue, but its something that might crop up if you use some odd-ball piece of software thats a bit antiquated.
