I know the max is 2GB...Is there anything I can do to make it recognize more? I mainly run gentoo and opensuse if that makes any difference.

I'm afraid there is no way. People have tried to do that on the T60/p but nobody has really succeeded.

A 7200RPM hard drive can bring you some performance boost, if you haven't done it yet. Personally I would also recommend a CPU upgrade. I find the performance increase from the 2.0Ghz to 2.2Ghz Dothan CPU upgrade is much more noticeable than the 1.5GB to 2.0GB RAM upgrade. The downside is that the extra heat generated is noticeable too.

Tony: Note that the chipset in T60's are a newer generation than the chipset in T42's - which (as far as I know!) is why T42's will only be able to hold max. 2 x 1 GB (= 2 GB!) PC2700 RAM modules. See e.g. the IBM T42 announcemet letter: New ThinkPad T42 notebooks feature new fingerprint technology or see the "famous" ltwbook with the official title: "Personal Systems Reference Lenovo ThinkPad Notebooks, 2005 to present - withdrawn -December 2007 - Version 332" which includes specifications on the most recent T4x's; both T41/p's, T42/p's, and T43/p's.

Best regards,

Johan
