T40 + ATI Overlay Settings Problem

#1 Post by Lookee » Thu Feb 21, 2008 4:01 pm

I tried to watch a DVD on my T40 for the first time last night and could hardly see anything during dark scenes. I attempted to change the brightness levels by using the ATI Overlay settings which by default were set to the lowest setting possible. As I increased the brightness I could see an improvement but as soon as went back to watching the DVD the overlay settings reset themselves again.

Has anyone else had this problem or know what is going on? Is it a problem with my overlay or is there another way of adjusting the brightness that I should be using. I use DVD X Professional for watching DVD and unfortunately it doesn't include color and brightness options.

It may be worth re-setting the overlay controls to default again and then trying to play a DVD with Windows Media Player and see what happens.

Cheers, reading your post made me realise that I hadn't tried watching the DVD on any other system

I just tried the DVD on my desktop and TV and discovered it was due to poor quality DVD, either that or the producers felt like making a movie where you couldn't actually see half of it :)

well it seems as though my first assumption was correct. I just tried another DVD and it was dark also. Tried it on the desktop and it wasn't dark so it's definitely not the dvd this time.

I found the contrast, brightness settings on DVD X and noticed that the brightness was set to the lowest setting. So I adjust it til it looks perfect (about halfway)and then immediately it automatically starts re-adjusting itself and the slider moves slowly all the way back down to the lowest setting?!

I tried uninstalling the ATI Control Panel in the hope that it might stop it (I thought that would disable the overlay) but still no go, the system will not stop auto-adjusting the brightness?

Please help, it's really starting to frustrate me now :?

To determine which bit of software is causing the problem I'd recommend trying a different player to see what happens. As WinMP is included for free, that might be the place to start.

I got Blaze HDTV OEM with a generic USB TV tuner and had a minor problem with the sound, this made me do the Google thing and I found quite a bit of help. Whilst researching my own issue I found people asking for help with the problem you're having and it turns out that the version of Blaze they were using wasn't "kosher".

I'm not saying that your copy of DVD X player is dodgy but it could well be broken. That's why trying another player will, at least, point to what piece of software may be at fault.

Cheers Stan. I didn't have a DVD decoder installed on the system to trial on media player. I just decided on to re-install DVD X and and update and that fixed the problem. I was just stuck thinking that it was all to do with the overlay and overlooked the basics.
