Issues with Seagate Momentus 100gb/t42p

#1 Post by jpresto » Wed Dec 01, 2004 3:11 pm

Just picked up this drive ($200 at best buy - not bad considering it's $190 at newegg) and it's not being recognized by the T42p - running latest bios 3.13 (late oct)

Anyone else have this issue? Drive works fine connected externally via firewire.
Thanks - Joe

To answer my own question - the drive wasn't plugged in all the way. This unit really had to be pushed in snug.. i'm hoping it doesn't slide out during normal use.

I'm ghosting my system over.. there's a bit of a squeal from the unit - hopefully nothing permanent. These drives are supposed to be the best performers of the 5400 rpm units.

Thanks -Joe

Please let us know how you like the drive once you start using it. I am mostly interested in how it feels speedwise compared to 60gb 7200rpm drive and how noisey it turns out to be. Thanks.

Yep, me too.

I read elsewhere that even the (much delayed and not available) Hitachi 5k100 new generation 5400rpm performs almost as fast as the 7K60 at a fraction of watts and decibels.

The momentus 5400.2 according to each datasheet is somewhat more noisy and more power hungry than the 5K100 but it's marginal and is superior to the 5K80 in this respect by far.

The 5400.1 was faster than the 5K80. If tradition prevails it is plausible that the 5400.2 might even be faster than the 7K60....

Drooling for benchmarks.....
