Hi;
I have a T40 with 512MB RAM.
The 1050 Optional DIMM slot (the one that is accessible from the bottom by just removing a panel without having to remove the back or take apart the machine is empty.
Is it really so simple to just buy a 1 GB DIMM & plug it into that DIMM slot and then I have 1.5 GB?
And what do I have to look for in the memory I buy? I've read "PC2700" on this forum, but I don't really know what that number means aside from it identifies a class of memory card & I can search for it. Are there any other specifications I need to consider? I found one 1 GB PC2700 on EBay for $24. Assuming it is what it says it is, can I just buy that & plug it in?
I know there can be issues with compatibility of running different kinds of memory together; is that something to be concerned about here? What about number of pins? I've seen 1 GB PC2700 cards advertised with 184 pins (the one above) and 200 pins. Does it make a difference for my T40?
I know these are elementary questions, but I couldn't find the exact answers by searching on the forums, and I've been burned once by buying a DVD-ROM drive that claimed to be compatible with T40's, but there were apparently 2 versions of T40 with different sized <ultra> bay slots, and the one I got wouldn't even fit physically into my machine. So thanks for patience & understanding.
Paul
Upgrading memory in my old T-40
Re: Upgrading memory in my old T-40
Pretty much. However, only $24 sounds suspiciously like desktop ram. The normal price seems to be around 50. Make sure you are getting a "SODIMM", which is the name for the half-size laptop sticks. And also avoid DDR2 ram, which is the very cheap stuff for newer laptops, but it will not fit in a T40.PaulK wrote:Is it really so simple to just buy a 1 GB DIMM & plug it into that DIMM slot and then I have 1.5 GB?
