T40 specification help?

Can you guys help me out, I've acquired a laptop and am having a little difficulty on whats suppose to be on the inside. Machine has not HDD so unable to boot fully, tried a Linux Live CD, which failed too. I've downloaded the ISO for PC Doctor if that is a pointer.

Details of machine are:

IBM T40 2373 82G
1.5 Ghz
256 MB RAM
14" screen

How can I find out what type of wireless card it has? VGA memory? Battery cycles? System test for performance?

All comments greatly appreciated.

Pay attention to the end of that URL, it's where you put in the model number.

Battery cycles requires booting some sort of OS. Linux will usually only show the battery wear percent, the really new versions will show the cycle data and manufacture date.

- I can't make the link by aaa work, but you may see ThinkPad T40 2373-82G specifiactions or see the thread T4X specs (see the post of Sun Jan 28, 2007 7:35 am) which will take you to the tawbook. There, on page 47 you will find the 2373-82U which is the US-version of "your" T40 (the "G" in the end of your suffix mean, I believe, that your T40 was sold in Europe).

Thanks for your pointers, a great help indeed.

One more pointer, this machine has a wireless card, Intel Pro Wireless 2100 which supports "B" networks only (I believe?).

Can I just pop a Intel Pro Wireless 2200 to give me "B" and "G" connectivity?

Any advice or potential pitfalls?

No pitfalls, just download the driver for 2200BG and you're good to go.

Never, EVER, carry that machine with one hand. That's the biggest potential caveat with any T4x....

Absolutely, I have a T42P which is my limb. I shall look into some Intel Pro Wireless cards on Ebay, which seem pretty cheap.

Not that I know anything about them, but I have recently seen several Atheros miniPCI 802.11b/g wireless cards on eBay which claim to consume only very low power and also feature a "SuperG" mode (108 Mbit/s), see e.g. Atheros AR5005GS Wireless Mini PCI Card For IBM T40. Try search for "Atheros" on eBay for yourself, and see what comes up.

Hmmm, I would prefer Atheros; been hearing a lot of good info about them.

Interesting input, any recommended Atheros cards? or should I say approved cards; tried and tested...?

The IBM A/B/G is the only error free Atheros. You can still get any card to work, it's just more hassle.

The Atheros ABG Card is PCI Express - different connection. No options for IBM T40 / T42?

G and N routers are backward compatible with B adapters...

I have no connection problems with my B adapter and my G router...
