I have the 2373M1U which I bought on eBay. Great price. I've purchased 2 thinkpads from the same guy already. Great service.

scorpiontico,

if you are in the USA, try this:

http://www-1.ibm.com/shop/pc/personalpa ... usstudents

then enter the model number in the quickbuy up the top right, and you should see an appropriate discount on the next page...

oh, also note for the model u mentioned (2373m3u), since it's not a thinkpad express model, there are specials on that model which offer a free thinkpad port replicator II or free ibm nylon thinkpad carry case and noise cancelling headphones. click "add options" during the shopping cart and u'll see it underneath the "special offerings" select box

Do you mind telling me the name of the dealer or his eBay id? :)

If you call IBM, you can talk to them about Edu discounts. They can check everything for you, and offer you something.

I called IBM's edu number to ask if I was eligible for the student/alumni discount. I'm an alumni. I graduated about 30 years ago from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA..

The phone rep asked it I had a student id number. I said it was my SSN and I didn't want to give it out. She asked if I had anything else to prove I was a college grad. I told her I had my college transcript. She agreed that would be enough if they ever needed documentation.

My conclusion is that the edu discount seems to work on an honor system. One that may or may not ever be checked out.

We've been through this before with educational discounts. IBM does regular audits on Edu. sales. If you are caught, penaltys include the possibility of your credit card being charged the full difference unexpectedly, warranty cancellation, and a fraud call from the large cadre of IBM lawyers. Not worth it!

I'm a college graduate, an alumni. The eligibility criteria for student/alumni was not adressed anywhere I could find at www.ibm.com/education/us . I called the sales number for information and asked them about alumni eligibility. Amanda was the CSR. We discussed ways to prove I'm a college grad. She said a college transcript would do. I have not ordered as of yet. From that conversation I feel I did honest due dilligence to find out if being a college grad entitles one to the student/alumni price. I was told it does.

It looks like I've got just as good a discount thru my trade association, the National Association of Realtors.

Currently there's a 21% discount off the Web Price for many T series Thinkpads. The NAR price for a T42 2378fvu is $1,574.10. The same as the edu. price.

Esteban:

I was not questioning your eligibility. I DO take issue with your statement:

"My conclusion is that the edu discount seems to work on an honor system. One that may or may not ever be checked out."

I have personal knowledge of people who have gotten in trouble after being audited by IBM. I just wanted to warn others who might be encouraged or misled by your statement.

I wrote that the edu discount seems to be run on the honor system and may or may not ever be checked out because the IBM CSR, Amanda, in so many words told me that. She said if they ever needed to check out my alumni eligibility the transcript would do.

It seems to me that many folks, who are college grads, miss out on the edu. price and instead pay the higher IBM Web Price, or more from some other vendor. Or they bypass IBM entirely and buy from Dell, etc. because the alumni discount is so obscure (not marketed widely).

I own a small business. It takes considerably more effort to learn about ThinkPads and buy one than it does to buy a Dell, or something from Best Buy, etc. I get an IBM catalogue in the mail at my business. It doesn't mention the business discount thru NAR or the edu. discount for alumni.

Thanks to a Google search I found the thinkpads.com forumn and have learned much here to help me sort out the intricacies of ThinkPads. It takes considerable effort to learn about the many different T series models to narow it down to the one(s) that are most approptiate for my needs and budget.

I think that your intention was noble, and spreading the word about legit. discounts is admirable. We welcome you as a contributor to this forum. You sound like an honest guy who would never take a discount that you weren't entitled to, or encourage others to do the same. I was only confused by what knowledge you were trying to impart by posting your interpretation of the CSRs statement "in so many words" that they may or may not verify your status. No possible positive knowledge was passed on by that statement. In any case, I think we've both clarified enough. Welcome to the forum!
