T42 Modem replacement

#1 Post by Kyaresk » Sun Mar 09, 2008 10:41 pm

After having the internal and two PCMCIA modem cards go out in the last three weeks, I have a question.

I've looked at the Hardware Service Manual and replacing the modem looks like it pretty straight forward.

Is it? Can a fairly competent person do it themselves?

The machine is still under warranty (expires in June) but I need it for the month of April, so not really wanting to send it in until after the month is over.

Any words of wisdom? Should I stick with PCMCIA modems until I can live without my baby for a few weeks? Or should I try to find the part and replace it myself?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice offered.

I would have them do it when you can. However, the modem is straightforward to replace. I would guess something is wrong with your line. I have used lots of modems for lots of years and the only time I had problems, the line was bad. I have some around if you want one.

Bad lines are an understatement. One of the problems of living in the middle of nowhere, I suppose. We have had a natural gas pipeline put in over the last couple of weeks and they have ripped through the underground lines at least five times. But rain and wind can take out the connection to the house pretty easy too. If I had a dollar for each modem I've replaced over the last fifteen years, I'd be a much richer woman. :)

I'll probably let Lenovo fix the problem in May. If I didn't have a screenplay to write in April (the software requires 2000 or better), I'd do it now.

I'll probably contact you tho on an extra or two for future use tho.

Thanks so much.

Send it in, in Slovenia it took them 51 hours (dropping it off at depot, nice girl calling my my laptop is ready) to swap both modem/bluetooth and motherboard under warranty.

Replacing it: Download service manual, it takes 5 screws: 3 for keyboard, remove keyboard, 2 for modem/BT caard. If you have BT unplugging cables might be a bit tricky.

It's very easy process but if you still have warranty, you might get problems claiming it if you do it yourself.

Thanks for the reply. I've decided to send it in after April is over. Do have a new PCMCIA modem running in it now (albeit at a whopping 26.4 kbs).

But, I do plan on picking up a few spares for when the warranty runs out, just to be on the safe side.

i think i should have a modem from my T42 around here. I replaced it with a bluetooth/modem combo and the modem is just sitting around doing nothing.

I could probabyl give that to you and you pay shipping :D

I have a modem card here to give away also, the FRU P/N is 91P7657, I'm not sure if it's compatible...
