thinklight notifier?

#1 Post by harbong » Mon Mar 10, 2008 7:34 pm

this forum has saved my t40 thinkpad numerous times, from replacing a cpu fan, to pimping it out with bluetooth/wifi/extra hard drive. it's been an invaluable resource. thanks a lot guys!

what i was wondering, is that I've seen some apps for linux that allow the thinklight to function as a notifier for some things. I don't have linux on my t40 (plan to in the summer when I don't use the laptop so much for school), but I was wondering if there were any apps for windows that do similar things? for instance, if the thinklight would turn on when I receive a gmail message (like the system tray app gmail has) a quick search on these forums didn't turn up anything.

if something like this exists, let me know!

Apparently, there is at least one Windows program that uses the ThinkLight in a non-standard manner:

A incoming voicemail causes the ThinkLight to blink. There's some linux information here about how to control/use it:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkLight

I would guess that somebody will eventually port some of these functions into a Windows program (if it hasn't been done already).

I did some research yesterday and found a way to do it.

Reference implementation in Python can be found on ThinkWiki. Someone should probably write some more user friendly program based on this.

It even allows you to control volume and LCD brightness.

thanks, that looks like it has a lot of potential!
I don't know any thing about working with code, I wonder if anyone else has any incentive to tie this into gmail notifier or trillian?

Well it should be easy to do so for the Gmail, since it's apparently also written in Python.

However, Trillian appears closed-source. Does it let you run a command when a notification happens?

You can just use the Gmail rss feed ;)

I'm using this to check my gmail account on my T40p, it works great!

I posted something about it in Danish, but the script should be self explaining :) ("brugernavn" = "username")

Thinklight Gmail notifier

Of course, this leaves your username and password unprotected in a file, so you might want to add some safety to it....

@nkh155

That is a solution for Linux, I assumed we're seeking a way to do it on Windows and AFAIK, my script is the first to allow steering the ThinkLight on Windows.

As said above, someone still has to find a way to attach it to some program/plugin.

I will probably write a Skype extra some day soon.

@yak, well spotted, it's written for/in Linux, but as it's a python/bash script that uses wget (which is also available for Windows/DOS), I don't see why it wouldn't run in Windows calling your python thinklight script.

I just posted it to show a simple way to check a Gmail account for new emails. You could probably use the script I posted together with your thinklight python script, and you'd have a working Gmail notifyer :)

All you need is some way to run it at an interval.
