LCD inverter problem
LCD inverter problem
My T41p is having this problem, I just recently upgraded my CPU to a 1.8 Dothan and now I'm having intermittent LCD blackout upon boot up . I have ordered a new inverter FRU PN 27K9972 from IBM Philippines and replace the old one which I thought causing the problem as it was describe here : http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2 ... /#comments.
Still the problem persist after boot up of the unit

I have already done that ....and now the LCD turns on when I press FN +F7 then it goes off again and you still see the faint outline of the webpages I have browsed.

Is it possible to order just the LCD backlight from IBM, instead of the whole SXGA+ LCD assembly w/ backlight ?

I've never seen just the backlight being sold by IBM, but there are many sources for it online.
For example -
www.lcdparts.net/CCFL

Well.
You might want to try something like:
dissemble your lcd, straighten up the cables, or something like that.
I got similar problem a month ago and even ordered new inverter. Changed the inverter but the problem still persist. What I did then, was unplugging the inverter, tidy up the inverter cable and suddenly the problem gone. I have no better explanation for that
So, if that doesn't change anything
then.... well... you might need a new backlight.
hope that helps

its a CCFL backlight problem and IBM Philippines is charging Php.40,000 pesos =$975 USdollars for the LCD screen/SXGA+ 1500x1040
I have ask around for a 2nd hand unit , no SXGA+ ... only the XGA 14.1 are available for 5000 pesos.
What other parts are needed if I opted to use an XGA 14.1 LCD instead of the SXGA+ that was busted ??????

This sounds a bit expensive, especially taken into consideration that you could get a brand-new T61 for less money!!TOMSrolla wrote:its a CCFL backlight problem and IBM Philippines is charging Php.40,000 pesos =$975 USdollars for the LCD screen/SXGA+ 1500x1040

According to 14.1inch LCD service parts - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p (see the section LCD panel SXGA+, for T40/p, T41/p, T42/p series) you have an ID TECH panel with FRU= 11P8346. An alternative may be a Samsung panel, that has FRU = 11P8348. If you check eBay you will find several of these to much lower prices - or consider simply getting a cheap, used 14.1" T40/T41/T42(p) with an SXGA panel - and then just swap the panel yourself! For panels and cheap 14.1" SXGA+ T4x(p)'s; see:
a) IBM Thinkpad T40 1.6GHz 80Gb HDD 1Gb 14.1" SXGA+ WiFi
b) IBM THINKPAD T42 14" SXGA LCD SCREEN DISPLAY!
c) IBM ThinkPad T40 T41 T42 T43 R52 14.1 SXGA+ LCD 11P8348
d) IBM ThinkPad T40 T41 T42 T43 R52 14.1 SXGA+ LCD 92P6760.
Best regards,
Johan

Johan.......Thank you so much for the info and also for the EBAY links
so it's not possible to use an XGA LCD on my T41p and I had to look for an SXGA+ screen for replacement.

You can certainly replace your broken SXGA+ display with an XGA (= downgrade from SXGA to XGA) - but if you are (were!) happy with the SXGA resolution, I think you may perhaps be less satisfied with XGA... ask other forum members who have both seen 14.1" SXGA+ displays and 14.1" XGA displays what they recommend you do?TOMSrolla wrote:so it's not possible to use an XGA LCD on my T41p and I had to look for an SXGA+ screen for replacement.
Alternatively to eBay, put up a "WTB" (Want To Buy) advertisement in the Marketplace section in this (fantastic!) forum. Finally, check the thread WTB: 14" SXGA T6x, T4x Laptops and SXGA LCD for existin - see the post by BobA of Fri Mar 21, 2008 1:28 am. OK; ready, set, go!!
