1400x1050 res on a 14" T42 question

#1 Post by rocketman » Sun Dec 05, 2004 10:42 pm

Has anyone seen the 1400x1050 resolution display on both the 15" and 14" T42? I'm curious to know if SXGA+ resolution looks much smaller on the 14" display than it does on the 15".

Yes I have seen it. No, it is hardly any smaller. The difference in size is so minute as to be almost imperceptible.

gotta love the 14" form factor and the 5+ hours of battery life with the extended battery.

I had both side by side for a while. It's pretty hard to tell the difference between 14" and 15" at the same resolution. It's a much more noticeable jump from SXGA+ 14" to UXGA 15".
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

This thread has the following info in it which serves as a good mathematical comparison of the various resolutions/sizes:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=5714
So I wanted to mathematically compare the screen on my X20 to the one on my T40 to get an idea of what a resoultion of 1400x1050 would be like on a 15in screen
So here's what I did:
I divided the number of pixels on the screen by the area of the screen in inches
I then divided the result by 1000 to get a smaller number
This gave me an index which i used to compare the screens...

Kinda like this:
( 1024 x 768 ) / ( 9.6 x 7.2 ) / 1000 = 11.4
(i.e The 12in display is 9.6 long and 7.2 high...)

And this is what I've got...
12in @ 1024x768 (9.6 x 7.2) 11.4
14in @ 1024x768 (11.2 x 8.4) 8.4
14in @ 1400x1050 (11.2 x 8.4) 15.6
15in @ 1400x1050 (12.0 x 9.0) 13.6

So the screen that I am confortable with has an index of 8.4
The screen on my X20, which is not that confortable, has an index of 11.4
Finally, the screen on the 15 inch T42 has an index of 13.6, much higher than the X20
This leads me to believe that the T42 is even more unconfortable than the X20
