Choosing the screen size / resolution ?

#1 Post by arion » Mon Dec 06, 2004 10:19 am

I am a bit concerned about the resolution / size of the screen on my next laptop. I currently use a IBM ThibkPad T41 2373-7JM with 14.1" screen 1024x768 resolution and the text size is ok. I have used a HP Compaq nc6000 with a 14.1" screen at 1400x1050 resolution and the text is so small it hurts. The next laptop I am getting looks likely to have a 15" screen at 1400x1050 resolution.

Can some bery kind person post a JPEG image / screen capture of what a desktop / text etc screen looks like on a 15" screen at 1400x1050 resolution and a 14.1" screen at 1024x768 resolution

Also if someone is keen post a 15" screen at 1600x1200 resolution and 14.1" screen at 1400x1050 resolution and 15" screen at 1024x768 resolution

Thanks very much for this

Actually, on new versions of Windows, the text size is completely unrelated to screen resolution. The issue is usually that the display's DPI setting needs to be set up for the resolution. (This applies to any hi-res monitor)

To resolve this, go to: Display Properties / General / DPI setting.

Choose a custom setting from the combo box. Set it accurately by dragging the ruler so that it's accurately sized. Your fonts will now be correctly sized.

As a followup note, I will mention that the Windows DPI settings changes don't work with all applications. For example, Lotus Notes doesn't reflect the changed DPI settings (instead it has its own way to adjust font size). Some proprietary software I use everyday for work doesn't work with changed DPI settings, because various prompt boxes are now to small to contain the larger text. In my experience about 1/3 of the software I've used doesn't work optimally with modified DPI settings.

Fortunately, most software does have internal settings to control such things and usually a happy medium can be found. I now use a 1400x1050 screen and am upgrading to a 1600x1200 next year...
