USB hard disk missing after T41's restore to factory setting

#1 Post by Appia » Sat Mar 29, 2008 9:03 am

Hi, I am here to request some help after failing to find a solution in the forum.

Several days ago, upon request of a friend, I retored his T41 to its factory setting using the IBM Access key. Everything seems fine except the USB ports after the restore.

The HP optical mouse could not work automatically as it should when attached to a USB port in T41. A question mark showed next to unknown USB device in Device Manager. After I manually updated the driver, the mouse started to work.

When I attached a Western Digital USB hard disk (Elements is its model name) to the USB ports, a message showed up to the effect that a faster USB2 device was attached to a slower USB 1 port. However, My Computer did not show an extra drive letter (it should F) as expected. The same WD hd had worked well with that T41 before the restore operation.

I updated the device driver for the external USB hd in Device Manager in the same way as the optical mouse. The external drive was still nowhere to be seen in My Computer.

I fired up Manage in My Computer properties, no extra drive was found in Removable Storage group.

I went to Disk Management, the T41 took a while before showing all the drives installed. Disk0 is the default hard disk with two partitions (C, D) that came with the T41. Disk1 was entitled Elements. So the WD USB hd was recognized. I made it active and assigned the letter F (letter E was already taken by CDROM drive) to it.

The properties of the WD external USB hd showed the device was working properly and the publisher of the driver is Microsoft. Nevertheless, My Computer does not show a drive F, to my dismay.

Pls see the screenshot:

I am at a loss as to what to do and I have a reputation to defend as a computer guy among the friends.

Would be grateful for your advice.

By the way, I am going to receive a new ThinkPad soon to replace my aging VAIO.
