t40 ethernet prob

#1 Post by lynnja » Sat Mar 29, 2008 9:22 am

I am checking out my new (used) t40 I just received.

My ethernet does not work. I went thru a series of dianostics with my ISP and they determined it is my hardware.

I cannot test with PC Doctor , as the icon for my ethernet is not there. Only my icon for wireless.

The device manager shows the hardware for ethernet. I have updated driver, uninstalled, reinstalled....

Ibm's website had a diagnostic you could check ethernet on and here are the results:

Network adapter
Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection

Resource conflicts
No conflicts were detected with the adapter.

Protocols
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Ping test
The Automated Solution has successfully completed the loopback ping test but was unable to contact the default gateway. This may be caused by ISP gateway problems, cable problems, or incorrect settings. For additional help, contact your network administrator or Internet service provider.

Network settings summary

IP address: Not configured
Gateway: Not configured
Primary WINS servers: Not configured
Secondary WINS servers: Not configured
DNS servers: Not configured

I am confused. As far as I know everything is configured...went over all config with ISP....

If you look at where the ethernet cable is plugged in and with it plugged in and running, is there a green led on - and possibly a flashing orange one? If the green led is on, you have a link to your router, switch or gateway.
You can definitely run pc-doctor to test the lan hardware, it boots from dos and is independant of your os setup.
Could be just a bent or dirty conection wire inside the lan port of the T40 where the cable plugs in, but sounds like just a software setup issue.

Thanks for your response. There are no green/orange lights where it plugs into computer.

If I take same ethernet and plug into desktop --connection is fine.

PC DR. doesnt even detect the ethernet, so I cannot test it with that. It only detects the wireless which works fine. However device manager shows Ethernet hardware...?????

Have you checked in the systems BIOS setup to ensure that the ethernet lan hardware is Enabled and not turned off?

There are different versions of PC Doctor. Try the DOS one, not the one for Windows. A bootable ISO image can be downloaded from Lenovo.

I went in and and check BIOS setup and it was enabled.

I did run PC Doctor in the BIOS diag. It tested and passed but it just said Intel Ethernet, and did not show the other intel wirelEss. So it may have been checking the wireless again. iT SHOULD show both adapters and only shows one.

IBM's check just says it is enabled and that gateway is not assigned...?????
