Question about RAM

#1 Post by dwilsonfl » Sat Mar 29, 2008 10:55 am

I have a T40 but when it exhibited the GPU problem, replaced the MB with one from a forum member. It is from a T41.

My question is, I still have the 2100 RAM in it. Would it benefit greatly from faster RAM (worth the $$ IOW) or should I just leave it as it is?

Thanks again,

David

Hi,

Unless you get it for free, it is normally not worth to buy PC2700 memory to replace PC2100... minimal improvement.
Another thing is adding more RAM. It can mean a noticeable speedup depending on your working set size.

I don't think you would notice the difference. The faster drive is a significant improvement and adding more memory could help I think more than changing the speed,

well it seems sometimes the faster RAM is cheaper than the 2100 or 2700. I have a gig of 2100 (2x512) and I could go to 2 GIG of up to what speed?

So a 7200 HD or even 10,000 rpm is the most impressive speedup?

I remembered that you did and that was why I mentioned it. I wasn't saying you needed the hard drive since I knew you had it already.

You can use any DDR memory and the ThinkPad will underclock if necessary. So get the least expensive if the faster memory is cheaper.

@ dwilsonfl:

Now while you are it anyway (replacing your mobo, and considering "additional" upgrades), I suggest you review the thread New T40 owner, new upgrade race!! - and after reading that, I guess that you will soon have an almost brand-new T40 ready for the next few milleniums!

You might also want to browse the threads Pimp my T41p and T40 - Banias to Dothan Upgrade - Details? and T42 Upgrade Possibilities - they all also apply for T40's.

Best regards,

Johan
