Disk Activity....

#1 Post by SimonCC » Tue Dec 07, 2004 2:37 pm

Out of interest, when your t42s are idle, is the disk activity light gently flickering every second(not talking about disk thrashing though)? I ask because since i installed executive diskeeper 9 the disk activity light is never totally off. Before i installed diskeeper, when idle, there was no activity. This occurance is the same regardless of smart schedule being on or off. I have all unncessary service off on windows etc etc. I d appreciate some advice on this as im worried that this might be effecting my performance and/or hd health.... :(

Remember that the light also blinks when the CD-ROM is in use. Some CD-related applications (and drivers) will poll the drive on a 1-2 second interval. You might try removing the CD-ROM drive to see if the blinking stops.

Bummer :(

FYI: I don't see the regular drive activity that you do on my ThinkPad. Good luck on tracking it down!

Same here. I have a T42p with 60GB 7200rpm harddrive.
I can "feel" that the disk never completely stops... I already stopped the index-task from Windows which reduced the harddrive accesses to a minimum. Nevertheless the drive never seems to stop running to save power :(

are you using DK also ghostrider?? This is strange, i wonder if it just depends on the differant hd sizes?? I will try uninstalling DK soon to see if that solves the problem but i do wanna keep it as it is a great piece of software, but as i said before, im worred that its 'stressing' out my hd - even though activity is very small. I think the reason i may have this problem is that DK keeps checking disk activity to determine whether to defragment in the background or not, but when i disable 'smart defrag'. the disk activity remains the same...

I do NOT even use DK!

I've setup a power-profile for battery use that should turn off the HDD after 3mins....

Is there another way to controll it than by listening to the noises?

I've to correct myself: Right now the HDD spinned up so it has to be parked before.

I'm still new to my T42p...

im confused by what you mean, you cannot really control the disk activity per se, what you are talking about is allowing it to shut off when in battery mode to save power. Again, users of DK - your comments would be much appreciated!! :D

I know that I can't set the amount of disk activity... but I thought that I allowed the disk to shut off but it would not do it.
Well, maybe some word processing put already too much I/O traffic to shut off the drive... Hmmm...
Well, doesn't matter. I still have to test so much after owning this new toy for just 3 days now.

I have diskkeeper 9 installed and my disk doesn't blink unless i'm using it. Every once in a while I do see a small flicker, but that is typical for a windows box. My drive does spin down just fine.

I don't use any of the automated clean-up features of diskkeeper though, so mine isn't active often.

Is disk keeper part of the IBM preload image?

I seem to have a flickering HDD light also.

No, it is not.

Try to deactivate the index-service. This may already help a bit.
