T42p warranty extension in France

#1 Post by livevil » Mon Mar 31, 2008 12:45 pm

Hi !

The warranty of my T42p is about to expire in a month or two. I've been looking for a warranty extension here in France, but I've been told by several sellers that I already had the longest existing warranty (3 years) and that it cannot be extended anymore.

I know that it's possible to do it abroad, as it was shown on this forum, but has anyone been able to extend his warranty in France ?

If so, where did you buy it ?

Thanks in advance !

livevil

Please inform about where you bought your T42p; was it bought in France or e.g. in the USA? You can check where its warranty is "born" by going to IBM/Lenovo Warranty Lookup page and enter your model and serila number (both found on the sticker at the bottom), Then, note on the following page what it says about "Location"?

Around Christmas (2007) I extended the warranty of two Danish T42's (i.e. both having "Location = Denmark"); they were both bought here in Denmark. Both T42's came with the three-year (carry-in) warranty, which was about to expire. I extended the warranty for one more year, buying the L527: ThinkPad 1 Year Courier Repair (product = 10N3143) which cost 625 DKK (per T42), excl. VAT, translating to approx. $125,-

The Danish sales rep. (not an IBM employee, but working in a company selling ThinkPads and warranties for these --> iteo.dk) told me that it would not be possible to extend the warranty any further - and only a one year extension was possible. In the USA, on the contrary, everything is bigger and better and faster and cheaper :-) and "over there" the warranty can be extended for two more years for only $150 (!!). Oh, well, that's one of the costs of being an European! :-(

PS: Yes, I know that you ask about France, and that I reply about Denmark - but my belief is that what is possible in Denmark should surely also be possible in France, at least when it comes to this specific, technical topic. Many things are of course MUCH better in France than in Denmark; the wine, the cooking and... aaah... the falling in love in Paris in the springtime!

Best regards,

Johan

My T42p was bought in France. The current warranty is 3 Years on-site Repair, Next Business Day response target (and I would like to keep the same because they were really efficient at IBM when I needed them : a motherboard, a DVD-writer and a Hard Drive :D ... not at the same time !)

I tried to find the corresponding part number, but the few sellers I could reach told me it won't apply on my laptop.

Ps: I've never been in Denmark and I think there are as many thing to be done there as there are in France... except for the wine and the cooking  . And springtime at this moment is rather wet... So if you plan to fall in love : take your umbrella !

Salut,

I've never tried to prolong the warranty but if it has an FRU number as Johan stated, you might want to give a call to the Part Order Department. The number is 0825001920. (Monday to Friday, 9h to 12h ONLY). Just give them your machine number and tell them what kind of warranty you want and they will find the correct FRU number for you.

If you already know the FRU number, then you can order directly on their site.

I hope it helps, and the rainy days will be over soon.

... thanks very much for the kind tip; I will immediately start planning!

I am surprised about the information you have been given, but in my experience the whole issue of ThinkPad warranty (not the least warranty extensions) at IBM/Lenovo is surrounded by a LOT of confusion and misunderstandings - try ask three different people and you may have three different answers!

Now, although I am not sure that it is of relevance, what comes to mind is the fact that your T42p already has a "warranty upgrade", as compared to the carry-in warranty that it was initially "born with". Such an in-effect warranty upgrade may hinder another warranty upgrade to be put in effect; I experienced this a while ago with an USA T42p. This story is discussed in the thread FA: Used T42p 2373-Q1U, see the post there of Sat Feb 23, 2008 2:15 pm. It could be that something similar troubles you? The ultimate answer you ought to get from IBM/France (call them and ask to speak to the "Country Warranty Manager").

Finally, check yourself the following two documents: ThinkPlus Maintenance Services Agreements - Europe - Last revised on March 25, 2008 and Lenovo - ThinkPlus - French.

Best regards,

Johan

As far as I know, it is still the initial warranty period and I never have to send the laptop or bring it anywhere : everytime someone came to pick it up or to deliver the spare parts.

But maybe it wasn't part of the initial warranty. I can't remberber if I took this as an option...

livevil, I think you need to call the Hardware Support to get a clear answer. They have every detailed information about your machine. 0238557750 is the number in case you no longer have it. I believe the warranty can be extended for only once.

Johan, that means it rains a lot here, really really a lot... It's like 24/7 non-stop for about 3 weeks already and I can't take it anymore
