T42 GPU Problem...is this fixable?

#1 Post by joe8848 » Tue Apr 08, 2008 9:48 am

I was replacing the fan on my friends T42 Laptop, I had done this on mine before without any problems. His was significantly tougher to remove though and when the fan finally did lift up it took the top part of the gpu with it and one chip.

I cant remeber the exact GPU but it is one of the ones that require the long fan. The part that came off on the pad of the fan was the small silver cover and one of the chips was still attached to that.

My question is can I apply some compound or something to reattach the chip and cover or is this GPU unit toast?

Thanks for any replies in advance.

Probably toast.

It might be (very remotely) fixable, but it's not as simple as gluing it back on (it's supposed to be held on with X little balls of solder, with X being 64 or something...). That's assuming other things didn't get damaged (lifted pads, etc).

There's a forum member here, jamiphar who deals with things kinda related to this. It's a long shot, but ask him.

if a chip has detached I would say that's broken unless you can solder..

It may have done lots of other damage if you managed to pull a chip off with it!

Yea I kinda figured it was done for but had to check. I flipped through the HMM and didn't see anything on replacing the chip so I'm assuming its directly attached to the motherboard, I'd check but I don't have the system with me
