T41 wireless connection disconnects every 30 seconds

#1 Post by dmhain » Wed Dec 08, 2004 3:09 pm

Hi, I have a new T41 and am going mad with the build in wireless! I have an established wireless network at home with 2 laptops using PC cards and have not had any problems. When I try to use my new T41 it connects ok but keeps disconnecting and reconnecting every 30 seconds, on top of that my wifes laptop has now started disconnecting aswell and it is something that the T41 is doing!!

I have unistalled the IBM access connecter as I thought that was somehow conflicting with windows wireless setup. I also upgraded to SP2 with no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas?

All help welcome!

T41 2373-1FG

I also have the same problem periodically on my T40. Reboot seems to solve the problem. Access point used in conjunction with this phenomena has always been a netgear 108 mb something and no encryption.

IMHO it's best to simply turn off the Windows option (to connect to a wireless network) and use Access Connections - I connect regularly to three different networks (1 home and 2 at work) and A: it's as stable as anything, and B: I don't have to do a thing (VERY important in my opinion...)

I have a user that just bought an R51, and uses Access connections. With AC, it won't connect to wireless at all. Without it, it will connect and drop within 30 seconds. We are using a wep key with our wifi.

So, in her case neither work well.

Hi,

I turned off the WZC and the wireless connection stays connected and doesnt interfere with the wifes anymore!!!!!

However, it now takes about 4 mins to boot up and I read this is quite normal if WZC is disabled, nothing in life is simple eh!!!

Many thanks for your replies, I am sure I will post another question soon!

when WZC was running, hopefully "let windows manage my wireless connections" was unchecked!

Uncheck "802.11x authentication" in the windows wireless manager and disable any encryption. If this doesn't work, update your router firmware to the latest version.

Use the 30MB Access Connections package to update all critical components relating to wireless in the proper manner. Make sure it is the 30MB+ version. You can download it here:

I'm having a similar problem with my Wifi on my T41. I am able to connect to a SMC AP without any problems with WEP & MAC Authentication on but when I try to connect to a NetGear or Linksys AP, the link is not good. Using IBM Access Connections I am able to connect to both the Netgear or Linksys AP but the connection is not stable. When I do a continous ping, the response time can vary from as low as 3ms to 1000ms and eventually timing out.

I have upgraded the IBM Access Connections (v3.53) as well as the Intel Pro 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter driver (v1.2.3.14) already but the problem persist. Anyone know how I can resolve this problem?. Apparently its a known problem. Tks.

I upgraded the firmware on my NetGear AP and the Wifi Connection seems more stable now. So for those having Wifi connections problems, i suggest you check that you have the latest firmware on the AP you are using. Good Luck.

If you are using the Intel based wireless adapters, please try the following...

1) Go into driver settings for the wireless cards

2) Force the preamble to be "Long only"

3) Turn off power management for the wireless adapter, and force it to go to high power consumption mode

4) Check your TCPIP settings, look under "Advanced" and make sure the box labled "Automatic Metric" is selected.

Again, I like Access Connecitions (most current, 30MB version), to insure my system is set up right.

I have a similar problem on my T41 with the IBM a/b/g miniPCI card.

As long as I use the (old) Phillips driver (2.4.x) I have no problems. Ever since the first Atheros driver (3.x) I have been unable to maintain a connection. I use WPA-PSK/AES and I've tried WZC only, AC only, and AC with WZC and none work with the 3.x driver.

I've hung onto the 2.4.12 driver as that's the last that works. I leave WZC enabled and recent versions of AC properly configure WZC to not manage connections (you can do this manually as well).

Hi, after messing about trying different settings I have decided that to make life easier I have disabled my internal wireless adapter and started to use my old PC card wireless adapter!! I have no problems with the pc card and I am currently sitting in the same room as my wife and neither of us are having continuous disconnections.

Cheers IBM for a brilliant feature that doesnt quite work!
