USB2.0 problems on T41

#1 Post by pi314 » Wed Dec 08, 2004 6:04 pm

I have a T41, running XP Pro. The USB ports worked fine for a year, then a month or 2 ago, I started having trouble.

A flash USB memory works fine.

Plugging in ext HDs gives either "USB Device not recognized", or "this device could operate faster", telling me I'm using a USB1.1 port.

Connecting to printers, I get communication errors.

I have tried deleting the USB drivers and re-installing. I've tried uninstalling XP SP2, and backed up 2 revs on the BIOS and controller firmware, but still the same problem.

I have plugged my USB devices into other PCs to verify they are all working.

Any ideas? Thanks

Have you done a completely clean OS re-install yet (from the recovery partition or recovery CDs)?

Are you using the IBM preload? Or did you wipe it....?

I started with a new hard drive, and installed the OS using the IBM CDs. That was about 8 months ago. The USB ports worked reliably as 2.0 ports for about 6 months after that.

How many devices are plugged in simultaneously? Do you have a passive hub attached (passive=not powered independently). There is a limit to how many devices the T models can take without a powered hub, or the Thinkpad Minidock (which has a unique power supply to support multiple USB devices)

Do you see any errors with a single USB device attached?
