Blue Screen after windows XP boots

#1 Post by T22 4me » Mon Apr 14, 2008 11:34 am

A couple days ago my T41 started this. After windows boots almost entirely ;the Blue screen appears.
It does this regardless of which user I log on as.
It has not been dropped(to my knowledge)No recent hardware changes,no software added for a couple weeks(unless maybe automatic updates)

I tried restoring to before the problem occured.Got the Blue screen before that could complete.

I run system diagnostics and the HDD da some sectors fail as well as the DVD player failed.I notice a light on the DVD /CD drive being on all the time that never was before.

I also tried system restore and recovery and that didnt even run.It went thru the prompts and sit there with a dotted screen all nite.

I take this out on the deck sometimes and work or watch a dvd and when I am thru I shut the Lid scoop it up under my arm and take it inside.

That is the last thing I remember doing with it before all this started..

Did I KILL my Hard Drive you think?

If you have the capability to, try booting from a live boot Linux CD like Knoppix. That has saved me many times in situations like yours.

If you are able to, obtain a Linux or a Bart's PE boot CD, and then boot and run the computer. If it crashes with a boot CD, then it is likely the motherboard (more than one T41 including my own needed a motherboard because of cold solder joints and flexing). It it runs stably and at length with a boot CD, then your Hard Drive is likely at fault - either a software corruption (re-image will fix that but lose your data and settings) or a hardware corruption (new drive needed). .. Was going try the Live linux cd;but, now the LCD wont even come on.

I can hear the fan running ;but, the only thing that responds is the thinklight.

I fear I may need a motherboard. If this is indeed the case,Is there an upgrade I should consider?..........thanks

I kind of like my T41 .......... Can I make it a T41P?

Took Battery out and got LCD back ;but, it still wont boot from Live CD.The two little green lights that are shaped like houses(one has a "1" and the other an "A") come on then go back off.......Is this a clue?

It was one of the 512 mb ram sticks

I bought a T40p and got it ready for vacation with a week to spare.

It has mostly same hardware ;a better video card though.and only a B wifi card and less ram

Now that vacation is over with I decided to upgrade using components from the T41 and when I pulled the ram and ABG card from the T41 I got the Blue screen.

When I got it narrowed down that was the culprit.and sure enough when I put the smaller working ram in the T41 and another Hdd it came back to Life.

Thought I would share this info. as it was something that was overlooked by me.and not suggested by any.

Who would have thought.

Best part is now I have a T40p and a T41(in need of Ram and a better wireless card)
