Difference between Crucial and Elpida memory

#1 Post by michaelj » Wed Dec 08, 2004 11:40 pm

Hi
I have a T42 2373-6VU with one 512MB PC2700 stick. I want to buy another stick of 512 RAM.

Has anyone tested both Elpida & Crucial? I have Elpida in my TP but the cost is $159 from IBM, whereas Crucial charge $93.

I installed 512 of Crucial RAM in a clients TP about a year ago and the performance actually degraded although the specs were the same.

You guys who work in IT depts or those who have tested many machined may be able to advise. I often tell clients that Crucial is just as good as the Dell etc branded memory but now I have to buy for my own TP, I am hesitating.

Crucial gets rave reviews around here. Do a search for memory in this forum and it is always the most often and highly recommended memory.

Crucial is a division of Micron technology and many major computer brands rebrand Micron, Infineon, Samsung, etc.. as their own and charge you more.

I have bought Crucial ram on many occasions, lifetime war. and free 2nd day shipping is a good deal. If you want other choices check newegg.com Corsair and Kingston ram are around the same prices(well within a good range)

Elpida v Crucial

Thanks for all the replies.
I thought I would post back that I went for Elpida after I did a quick search on eBay. Believe it or not, someone has been selling Elpida 1GB PC2700 for the T42 (amongst other models) on eBay and the final bids were topping out at around $180-$190.
That's an amazing price and I can vouch that it appears to be a genuine IBM part sealed and in an IBM box as I just received mine. The retail for this is $549 on the IBM website. I dont know who would pay $549 but a price circa $180 seemed an amazing deal.

I went from 512 to 1.5GB - buying a 1GB stick was really overkill - all I was originally planning to get was a 512MB stick bringing my total system memory up to 1GB, but I felt this deal was too good to miss.
If you're interested, just search using the phrase "Elpida sodimm pc2700" on eBay.

re the post asking about whether I have noticed a difference in performance, the answer is a little on standard web browsing. Web pages do seem to load a bit faster and my email apps open a bit quicker. I would notice the difference more doing video editing or more intensive tasks.

Elpida is the major Japanese memory manufacturer and is basically Hitachi + Mitsubishi + NEC merged together. Toshiba is out of the memory business.
