T42 vs T42p

#1 Post by RonS » Thu Dec 09, 2004 5:31 pm

I'm looking at the T42p 2373HVU and a T42 2373Q1U

The T42p has a a slower CPU and lacks the fingerprint reader. They both have the same graphics chip.

So, when does a Thinkpad model get the 'p' on the name?

The 2373Q1U is a T42p. The new fingerprint 15" T42p's are the 2373Q1U, and 2373Q2U.

But 2373Q1U is listed on IBM's web site as a T42, not a T42p.

So... what does the 'p' really mean on the model name?

"p" denotes the high end, 1600x1200 resolution and ATI Mobility FIREGL T2 128mb video card on the 15" T42.

The 'p' is the sign of distinction which is given to the highest performing models of a series. 'p' is therefore for performance. The current T42p differs from its standard T42 counterpart in the following ways:
  1. 128MB FireGL T2 is standard on the 'p', Radeon 9600/64MB is as high as non-'p' goes.
  2. 60GB 7200RPM drive standard on 'p'
  3. 1600x1200 UXGA Flexview available on 'p', SXGA+ is as high as non-'p' goes
  4. All 'p' models have Bluetooth standard, only some non-'p's do
  5. All 'p' models come with a 9-cell battery, all non-'p' come with 6-cell battery
  6. At current the 'p' are the only ones with 2.0 and 2.1 GHz CPU available

Yup - T42 2373Q1U ($4299.00 on IBM's web site) has all of those things, but it's still called a T42 - with no 'p'.

The 2373Q1U is a T42p. It is not a T42. If you see it listed as a T42, it's an error. If it has the ATI FireGL T2, it IS a T42p.

Minor clarification. T42p Express (2378DYU, 2379DYU) and EDU (23737XU, 23747XU) models come with the 80gb 5400rpm hard drive standard. Also, the T42p EDU (23737XU, 23747XU) models do not come with Bluetooth.

The definitive guide to model specs and designations is and has always been the TABOOK. The IBM website is full of errors. The missing "p" is just one of many inaccuracies.

OK - thanks for the info. I'm thinking strongly about ordering one of these...
