My T41 shipped with and still has an Agere Systems AC'97 Modem. The driver version is 2.1.31.0 dated 6/27/2003. The current driver, according to Lenovo website and Lenovo tech support is Version 2.1.31c dated 2/12/2004.
The download file for the driver is 1oma23ww.exe and there is a readme-type file named 1oma23ww.txt. Running 1oma23ww.exe extracts the files. The install instructions on 1oma23ww.txt are:
1. Start Windows.
2. Logon with administrative privileges.
3. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
4. Click Start, then click Run.
5. Specify W2KXP/SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click OK.
6. Follow the instructions. If you see the message Digital Signature Not Found appears, please click the OK button to continue installing.
7. Restart the system for the driver to be effective.
I did that. When I ran SETUP.EXE, there was a dialog with the message, "Do you want to install the modem driver?" I clicked OK. There was no "Digital Signature Not Found" message.
The progress bar showed it installing. After it presumably installed, and after I had Restarted, Control Panel shows that the Agere driver is still version 2.1.31.0 dated 6/27/2003, not 2.1.31c dated 2/12/2004.
Should I remove the driver to get rid of version 2.1.31.0, and then try again to install version 2.1.31c? If I do that and the driver is worse, how would I get 2.1.31.0 back?
Modem driver for T41 doesn't install
My recollection of that is fuzzy. My modem driver on my T41 is the same V2.1.31.0 2003 driver as you have. Yet my installer file and driver file is the V2.1.31c driver. I would have run the V2.1.31c install as well.
The driver you have and I have works just fine for me, so I would just use it and carry on.

Modem driver for T41 doesn't install
I'm glad the modem driver works fine for you. I have dial-up at home with CompuServe 7.0 and have several problems. I don't know which if any of them could be fixed by updating the driver. The most annoying problem is that sometimes when I want to connect, CompuServe freezes, then tells me there's a problem with the modem, to turn off the computer, wait 15 seconds, then turn it back on. Sometimes I have to turn the ThinkPad off and boot up several times before the modem will work.
Another problem is that I cannot connect to the Internet through the modem with CompuServe 7.0 if Microsoft Money 2002 is running. I do not have the same problem on my backup computer (a Windows 98 desktop).
A third problem is that I no longer can send faxes from my ThinkPad.

That is probably not a driver problem (although the modem could be defective, for the number of problems you face). Check in the modem properties, under Networking, and then Settings for the PPP connection, that "Software compression" is the only checked setting. Sometimes multilink is checked and generally should not be. ... JDH
