T40 SXGA LCD failure
T40 SXGA LCD failure
My beloved T40 2379 D5U SXGA LCD has failed. I can use a CRT just fine hooked up to the wifes KVM switch and using the Thinkpad keyboard / mouse. Everything else still works. PCDoctor Diags all pass.
The symptoms, when I boot, the LCD works for a few minutes with a red tint, the goes black. I can see can a faint outline on the LCD of the applications that I am using. The CRT connection works fine,
I have read many posts on this forum about such issues and the remedy seems to be, replace the LCD, with a complete LCD assembly.
just want to know if there are any tests that I can perform that may isolate the issue to a specific component in the LCD assembly, like the cable or inverter?
Any help on this issue is appreciated. This Thinkpad is the my workhorse.

This is the CCF tube failing. Much like your fluorescent lighting going out. If you are handy and have a good CCF on hand, then replacing it is an option. Otherwise there are members here that offers replacement services.

I have only replaced the CCF successfully in 15 inch UXGA panels. Basically you bend open the metal tabs on the frame, peel away tape from the frame, lift out the LCD from the frame. The CCF is in a holder on one edge.
I got my CCF from cracked LCD.
The only working 14 inch CCF replacement resulted in waviness due to BEF not being flat.

Your best option is (no doubt!) to contact forum member jamiphar (James Arndt) who runs Arndt Computer Services - see the thread LCD CCFL Backlight Repair/GPU Rework - I'll fix it for you!. Note the extremely good (!) user feedback that James is continually receiving.jtonge wrote:I have not been able to locate a source for the CCF tube.
Is replacing just the LCD panel the next best option?
No doubt in my mind - call James! He has also helped me several times, and I just cannot emphasize enough how overly satisfied with his outstanding fine service I am.
Best regards,
Johan

Re: T40 SXGA LCD failure
My trusty old T43p UXGA now needs a new CCF. It was turning on red for the longest time. Now it just goes blank while in the middle of something. I ordered new CCF from Moniserv in San Francisco. I hope these newer CCF last longer.
