T43P + Western Digital Scorpio

#1 Post by hoveringuy » Wed Apr 30, 2008 2:10 pm

So I understand that the T43 is finicky about what drives will work with it. I tried plugging in a Western Digital Scopio 80Gig drive and expected at least to get the error message but got nothing.

Absolutely nothing. It was a new drive in a sealed package and the Western Digital software didn't even find the drive in the sysem.

Is this a compatibility issue or was the drive just dead??

Welcome to the forum!

Are you sure that the drive is connecting to your ThinkPad properly? Sometimes I have had a hard time making the drive connect.

I would make sure that the caddy with the four screws and the hard drive cover are prepared correctly and try again. The drive label should be facing down.

No, it was installed correctly.

Again, no spin-up or anything. Brand-new drive.

With the T43's reputation for drive pickiness I didn't know if I had a dead drive or a problem with incompatibility.

Even the incompatible drives will still spin so the drive sounds dead.

Please be kind to inform about the specific model/type of the WD HDD you are trying to get to work - am I e.g. correct in that it is a WD800BEVE? If so, there is a bit of interesting in formation in the thread:
Problems with non-thinkpad option drives on T43 thinkpads where, in the post of Sat Feb 18, 2006 2:14 pm, bfgun wrote:I know this is probably a shot in the dar, knowing it won't work, but i'm able to get a WD WD800 Scorpio 80 gb hd for 50 dollars brand new. Problem is, i tried this in my t43 and got the 2010 error msg. the hd itself is an EIDE, not a SATA drive.
Since bfgun "at least" get the 2010-error, and you don't even do this, this (post by bfgun) seems to indicate that your HDD is either not mounted correctly, or is not working owing to being defective, or may be a wrong type?

PS: You are of course aware that T43's uses PATA HDD's (and that T43's has an internal PATA-to-SATA bridge).
