T43 only runs @ 800MHz

#1 Post by billp117 » Wed Apr 30, 2008 5:25 pm

IBM 1875DLU ThinkPad T43...only reports 798Mhz speed and it should be 1.73Ghz.

CPU-Z reports 1.73GHz...but all other reports are 800MHz like Belarc, Windows XP Information, etc. even when set at High Performance :?

Any help?

Thanks, Bill

In cpuz, where are you seeing the 1.73ghz, where it lists Specification or Core Speed?
What does it say for the Step Revision.

I saw it in Core Speed.

CPU-Z now reports:

Core Speed: 798.1 Mhz
Multiplier: X6.0
Bus Speed: 133 Mhz
Rated FSB: 532.1 Mhz
Stepping: 8
Revision: C0

I last saw 1.73 Ghz when I changed the setting to high performance...now it has no impact.

Try download the free Mobile meter to monitor the instantaneous CPU speed.

When you put a load on the cpu & monitor with cpuz or Johan's suggestion, does the speed change or stay the same?
Intel chipset driver up to date?

OK...after posting I put my brain into high gear. I downloaded the Intel Processor ID program and it reported the processor was running at 798 MHz.

I went into my BIOS and found the processor was set to "Automatic" when on AC. I changed that to High Performance" (I think) and now everything reports 1.73 GHz. I have never had to do this before. I always thought "Automatic" good enough and would run at high speed when connected to AC. Not so with the T43. My T42 is running circles around my new T43.

OH WELL...the problem seems solved. But, I would have preferred to leave the BIOS set on "Automatic" when running on AC.

Thanks for the help...Bill :)

I think the bios defaults to High Performance.

Glad you got it figured out...

I get the feeling nothing was wrong to begin with... the "automatic" setting is supposed to go down to 800 when you're not doing anything, and jump to 1.7 when the cpu load is high.

I think aaa is correct. My T41 loafs along at 600MHz most of the time at < 2 percent CPU utilization. That is as it should be.

When I need things, the CPU jumps to 1.8GHz (max speed) for as long as necessary. Sometime as long as necessary only registers on a graphical real time tool like Mobile Meter (the time is so short) and doesn't even exercise the fan. Other times (when I forget to log into a Windows 98 VM), the CPU pegs at 1.8Ghz and stays there until I log in. Fan turns on high. All of this is as it should be.

Good point...I will play with this setting to see if a load makes any difference.

I did go back to the T42 BIOS and mine does not have an "Automatic" setting like the T43. It does have a "customize" setting followed by two performance settings and it is set for Maximum Performance. Both BIOS are the latest from Lenovo/IBM...go figure.

Thanks again for all the input.

One last comment...I reset the BIOS back to "Automatic" and now it always reads 1.73 Ghz.

Go figure...Bill
