thinkpad durability

#1 Post by BigMacSangwich » Thu May 01, 2008 2:08 am

I think it's just all a bunch of hype when people say they can stand on their thinkpads without damaging it. At least im pretty sure that would kill my T41. when I put force on the screen it squeeks a little bit and also flexes slightly although not as much as a toshiba and sony vaio that I've owned. Sure i think they are one of the most durable laptops on the market but I don't believe all those extraordinary claims.

what do you guys think? can your thinkpad survive someone standing on top of it?

The T2x series could probably stand that, but I wouldn't try it with a T4x.

Probably not. Standing on the screen would definitely either Crack it or break.. something...

I had a Panasonic Toughbook CF-48 before this thinkpad and I've dropped it numerous times and it still worked, those are notebooks that can stand pretty much anything, also that thing weighed like 6 pounds.. ugh

Standing on the lid...600 series, possibly.

I've seen ThinkPads falling from utility poles and continuing to work, T2x series. They were far better than ToughBooks of the same generation.

My T60 or T43p falling from a utility pole...I wouldn't want to be around. But I'll tell you that new ToughBooks will take the fall and ask for more.

I've seen a lot of laptop abuse in my present line of work, and will say that ThinkPads have taken it better than any other consumer/business grade machine. However, that was never the main criteria when buying a computer for my personal use. I might not be cuddling my machines the way some people do, but I don't abuse them either.

At one point in my life I've owned an armoured Benz 300SEL 6.3 (W109). Great car that I've had absolutely no use for. After less than three months I've sold it to someone who had a real need for such a vehicle.

The same goes for anything else, at least in my opinion. You need an item that can tolerate (ab)use on your own level, no more and no less.

It really depends on how much the person standing on the machine weighs. If they weigh over 250lbs it will probably damage the frame. If they weigh 100lbs or less it probably won't. This is pure science here.

I think nothing would happen if a (normal weight) person would stand on a T4x but only with both feets and so that the main pressure would be applied to the edges, not to the center of the lid. Applying the whole weight to the center would most probably damage/break the LCD.
