Just FYI:

Since someone mentioned Lenovo, I will also add that IBM employees who were in PCD cannot look for other assignments or jobs at IBM for a period of two years from the time the deal is finalized (actually, they can't come back as of now for two years, technically speaking, but it will be 24 months from the time the sale is finalized in April).

Thats really interesting and the question arises: Why arent they allowed to become employes at IBM/LEnovo again within the next 2 years starting from April?

hundesau,

Maybe I'm wrong, but I read Conmee's message as meaning that people who were part of the Personal Computing Division are not allowed to get re-assigned from that division to another part of IBM for two years.

My guess would be that this would keep everyone from jumping ship. After all, IBM did say that the employees were part of the deal, too. They, of course, have the option to quite *entirely*, but then that would jeopardize their chances of getting a position elsewhere within IBM in the future (they'd have to be re-hired), so there is an incentive to suck it up and stick around to work for Lenovo for 2 years.

There was an interesting article in CRM (Computer Reseller Mag) that implies that a number of IBM R&D people may get lucrative offers from HP or Dell and this may be what undermines the IBM Lenovo deal. Without the same R&D effort, the Thinkpad line will lose it's lustre.

anyone here NOT really all that excited about the T43? upon looking at specs, while it does look impressive, i can still upgrade a lot on my T42 which would make it pretty [censored] close to the performance of the T43s, i can still upgrade my processor to the highest PM765 when the price comes down enough, i can expand mem to 2GB if i wanted to, i just dont seem to have the excitement for it :(

I was excited...until I heard about the battery life taking a dive because of the Sonoma PCI-E Bus. IBM's quoted times (tabook) on the "p" models are down about 0.6-0.7 hours from the T42ps (from 5.9 to 5.2 on the 14.1" models). Now, is the additional performance worth the drop in battery life? I believe that depends on each person.

Anyone find it odd that the current top of the line 14.1" T42p still has a list of $4249, while the top of the line 14.1" T43p will go for around $3800? Of course, you can't get the T43p until April....

I have been following this thread, and it seems that the T43 is just an incremental improvement (not a quantum leap) from the T42. The ExpressCard slot, faster FSB and CPU chipset sound all like good things, while the supposedly lower battery life seems like a small setback.

Also, the graphics card sounds like a nice improvement, unless we are stuck with system graphics on the T43 (vs the T43p).

I guess that for me the biggest question is: Are the little flaws regarding the construction of the T42 going to be gone with the T43, the same as the T23 ironed out some of the problems with the T2x series (stress cracks for example). Some people might consider this a stupid consideration

T42 vs. T43

#205 Post by kobepm » Fri Jan 21, 2005 12:29 pm

Having read many posts...I am starting to wonder if it's worth it to wait for the T43. While I'd like to be "future-proofed" as much as possible...do the improvements to the T43 really make it that much better a machine than the T42?

Any help/insights will be appreciated & used in my buying decision.

Thanks.

ready for some pics?
Japanese T43 was photoed:

all pictures are from e800.com.cn, not great picture quality, but you get the idea

http://www.e800.com.cn/articles/images/ ... 477498.jpg-T43 and T42, band of brothers : )
http://www.e800.com.cn/articles/images/ ... 461390.jpg-T43
http://www.e800.com.cn/articles/images/ ... 493489.jpg-suprisingly, I believe the T43 is actually slightly thinker than T42(if I am not mistaken T43 is the machine that's turned on)

A similar T43 (with X300 and 512MB, 1.86GHZ, 2687-D7U) is 2079$ (List price) so calculate with your current discount and you will see...

Where are you finding the models and prices? When I go to the ibm site I only see 2 T43 models, both having intel graphics.

Taurens - it appears that both the T42 and T43 use the exact same chassis. They are both the same thickness.

dr72 - See the document at http://www.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/5/ ... 05-035.PDF and scroll to the bottom for prices.

I haven't been following this thread and haven't read all 14 pages of posts, so if this has been posted before, I apologize.

Found some additional links on the IBM site today with more T43/p info and thought some of you might be interested.

Are there any advantages of the 128MB ATI Mobility Fire GL V3200 over the
older 128MB T2, or the new 64MB X300 (except for the obvious double
memory)?

The FireGL V3200 is a bit faster than the FireGL T2 based on raw numbers:

Hard to say if most people would notice a difference in games and applications.

Look likT43 is a very nice laptop and EXPENSIVE too, but still missing some features:
- Bluetooth 1.1 NOT 1.2
- NO Firewire
- NO Memory Slot for Digital Camera

What eles? any input?
P.S. I bet the T43P probably cost up to 3500 - 4000 USD

Still missing

Decent speakers
DVI and Analog adaptor
More USB 2.0 ports
Wide screen option

As for these

Bluetooth and Firewire are almost useless and will die soon
Parallel is useless and no serial port !

Check out the many posts to the pdfs with the announcements. The T43p pdf states that the planned availability is not until April. The GMA900 and the X300 are late Feb. The new TABOOK.pdf also has this info in it. There's another thread with the link, or you can go to Bill's storefront page, which also has a link to the tabook.

Firewire may be useless cause it got few USB 2.0 ports, but Bluetooth still useful if the laptop get one, you can use it with headset, cellphone etc.

firewire isnt gonna die yet because people still rely on it for digital video transfer. firewire has a steady transfer rate while usb 2.0 may be faster it does not have a steady transfer rate therefore dv cams generally use firewire. as for bluetooth... i think cell phones will continue relying on it.. but i'm not too familiar with the difference between 1.1 and 1.2. and for people complaining about camera memory sticks.... i think there are just too many different kinds...? i personally use cf cause of my powershot but i had a sony memstick for my clie... and i know a lot of people are using sd... well whatever just my two cents.

Definitely seems like the T43 is the refresh to the T4x series that the T23 provided to the T2x series.

The faster FSB, and other changes do seem to have the hallmark that the T23 had to the T20/21/22, as well as the new PCIe bus etc. I can't say the T43 has me extatically excited by the specification; but then I guess at least in some departments, the T43 is 'keeping up' with other manufacturer's laptops/notebooks/lap burners ;)

For now I will stick with my 3 year old T23, and I can see myself using it for many years yet before I find myself upgrading. :)

Perhaps I'll get a T43p in 2008 ;)

Unless I get a company laptop, all the more reason for me to hopefully suceed in getting a job with IBM....
