T42 will not start after new install

#1 Post by lemmerdeur » Sun May 04, 2008 9:19 pm

Hello, I just did a fresh install on my T42 with a new HDD and the recovery CDs. It is recovery 5.8 After asking me to insert all the CDs, 1 to 5, it ask me to remove the last Cd and rebooted. It then runs for about 5 minutes and ask me to remove any CD or disket and reboot. At that point, it restart but I have a black screen with a little white line blinking in the upper left corner of the screen. Beside the fan running, nothing else is happening.
What should I do?
After reading a lot, I tried booting with my XP cd and doing a restore then MBRfix and BOOTfix. It loads windows XP now but it is asking me to activate windows XP. There I know that it will not work. I will try now to reinstall from the recovery cd and see if it works now.

Assuming your running XP, boot to the recovery console, go to the repair option, and select fix MBR.
There are numerous ways to fix it, this is one way.
Search will give you more info as well.

Could I have a HDD problem? It is a seagate 80GB momentus 5400.2
It seems that I am not the only one with this HDD and problem with the T42. When I insert the 10GB HDD I had inside the T42, There isn't any problem to detect the drive and run correctly. The problem is only with the Seagate HDD. Compatibility or HDD problem. The HDD is brand NEW from the factory, could that be the problem? Should I just load Windows XP from my XP cd then errese the drive and load the recovery T42?

A blinking cursor could definately be a HD problem. You might try doing the factory install again, maybe something failed along the way, tedious I know but that's what i'd do. Then see what happens again. I had a HD here for one of our customers that was supposedly new from the logistics dept. Stick it in the machine and you get the blinking cursor, then your TP wouldlnt go past the bios splash screen for about 20 minutes, had to sit there and catch it's breath. :x

Looks like you added to your original post after getting past the XP boot problem.

I had a similar problem with a T30 and recovery cds. When you install windows XP with the recovery CDs, there isn't any keys to enter. When I called Microsoft, they wouldn't accept my copy as an original. I did a full errase and reinstalled the recovery version and it went OK.

After trying for 2 days, I finally have the T42 running. When I tried to install with my microsoft XP cd, a small partition was created. That is why it asked me to register my download of XP. I used an ISO (Gparted) to remove the partition and had to do it 4 times for an unknowned reason. finally I loaded the recovery version with success. I hope this will help others with similar problem.

Nicely done.
