T40: systematic problem with display?

#1 Post by emeu1 » Tue May 06, 2008 5:54 am

Hello,

February 1st, 2008 I bought a refurbished T40 with a three month warranty and a WinXP Pro license.
Immediately after I purchased it, I upgraded the BIOS to the latest release. Installed the latest Windows XP Pro drivers and the latest drivers form the Lenovo/IBM site.
I only installed Mozilla Firefox and OpenOffice 2.3.

After about two weeks, on an evening, the display suddenly became "garbled". Showing horizontal lines, like an old CRT television screen that is out of sync. I rebooted the laptop and it worked fine again.
The problem re-occured another two times in the next four weeks. As I was pretty sure this had to be a hardware problem, I brought the laptop back to the company I bought it from as it was still under warranty. Th company tested the laptop and, fortunately was able to reproduce the error. The company suspected a motherboard and/or video "adapter" error. As repair would be to expensive, I would get an other T40 (same specs). Because the local shop (the company has more than one shop) was out of T40's I had to wait a couple of days before I could pick up a "new" T40.

As I went to the shop on the agreed date, the technician told me they had got two T40's delivered. He had tested them and, unfortunately for me, these T40's had shown the same problem! I had to wait another couple of days for another T40 to arrive.

I'm now wondering, is there a known display weakness/problem with the T40?
If so, I would like to know. In that case, it maybe better that I ask for an other model ThinkPad.

Kind regards,

You have an infamous problem with the GPU that T4x series are known for, and are looking at motherboard repair/replacement.

Read the sticky "my T42 shuts down when I move it"...
