Will a T60/T61 WIFI card fit in my T42?

#1 Post by Mr-Pacman » Fri May 09, 2008 8:03 pm

I've got a T42 with the Intel 2100 B Wifi card. I've always had an ethernet cable plugged in and never really used the wireless. I tried it this morning and it's terrible. I get "excellent" signal, but it keeps dropping the signal every minute or so and the internet is very slow.

I've read lots and lots of threads on the T4x wireless issue with this particular card.

I plugged in a PMCIA wifi card and I get screaming fast internet....so I'm quite sure the Intel 2100 card is the issue.

Is it possible to install an Intel 3495 a/b/g card from a new T60, or perhaps a "Thinkpad 11a/b/g" (which I believe is the Atheros card) into a T42.....or will I have to use one of the older "g" cards?

Has anybody ever put a newer card into a T4x series machine.

Thanks,
Pacman

The T60 uses the PCI express slot for the wireless card. There are no PCI express slots on your T42 so no the T60 card will not work.

thanks for the quick reply. So I guess it's safe to assume the T61 won't work either?

Do you have a preference for a "G" card that will fit a T4x series?

Be sure you have "Wireless power settings" set to "Maximum performance".

Where do I find that setting?

I have a PMCIA card in the laptop right now and I'm getting blazing fast internet.......so would that "Wireless power setting" only affect the built in wifi card, or is it safe to assume that since this external card is working well, there is something wrong with the internal wifi?

Thanks,
James

In the Device Manager you will find this (and many more!) option(s).
